The McCarthy hire is a major disappointment. This doesn’t feel like an organization that has any forethought on how to start over with success. I’d rather they take a chance on a young, energetic guy like Shula than a washed up guy that was fired from his last job and has been unemployed for a bit. Very disappointing.

I agree with the sentiment on this board, not excited by the McCarthy hire. He got canned in Dallas so what does that tell us? He's a decent coach but we need a transformation not incrementalization. Feels like more years of 9-8 or 10-7 irrelevancy.

So, the Ratbirds get Minter and the Steelers get McCarthy. FFS.
Or said another way the Ravens hired a complete unknown with a coaching silver spoon the Steelers get a guy who earned everything he’s gotten including winning a Superbowl
Btw he didn’t get fired in Dallas

Fair points. McCarthy’s contract wasn’t renewed = fired. His best days were in Green Bay. That was a long time ago. He has the second oldest roster in the league. This coaching staff, front office, and roster need some young bloods. It’s stale. Hiring McCarthy is not an upgrade over Tomlin.

Not getting renewed is not the same as being fired. In fact it might be worse as you don’t get any free money. We’ll see if he’s an upgrade from Mike T. He might not be in 26 for the reasons you point to but I think he will be in 27

Someone said the younger guys were interested in analytics and more progressive coaching approaches and MM was the most likely to keep the status quo. As plausible a theory as any though you wonder how they ever ended up with Tomlin in the first place with such a backwards mentality.
