Very disappointing hire. I was really looking forward to having some new blood in the organization who wouldn't be happy as a pig in chit with 9 wins per season and a first-round shellacking on the way to making tee times for the off season. You know...some hope for a change? Nah! Lazy hire by Rooney and an ownership group that is perfectly fine with the worst facilities in the NFL, nine wins on average, and early exits from the rare post season.

It is also possible that nobody else really wanted this job. Face it, the Steelers team is a mess and a half. No matter who they call the HC he's going to have a rough start here for a couple of seasons with no QB, poorly performing OL, aging (or aged) defense, etc. The HC might feel like a fall guy, so while other opportunities abound why walk into that mess?
Mabye this is a way to a high draft pick

They have 12 picks in this draft. They could have packaged up something for a higher draft pick. However, they desperately need a QB and it may not be worth moving up as the QB draft class looks really, really weak.

I don’t hold McCarthy responsible for Dallas - working for Jerry Jones is obviously the worst job in sports. I’m more concerned with the fact that he ran out of gas in Green Bay. This may be a situation where the two coordinator hires determine whether the Steelers can win enough and win in the playoffs. Not happy but the franchise is not the Jets - the squad expects to win. Hoping for the best.

That seems pretty obvious and seems very, very short sighted and disappointing. They need a complete rebuild and they won’t admit it. Whether that is the Rooneys or the front office, who knows, but it is disappointing.
I think the STUPID plan is...have McCarthy run the team until Watt retires and then bring in a young coach. Rooney sees the Steelers as competitive and wants to keep Cam and TJ. They won't be here for a rebuild.

ESPN: “McCarthy was hired in part to get Rodgers back.”
NFL Network saying he wasn’t hired to specifically to get Rodgers back, but if anyone could persuade him back, it most likely would be McCarthy. They said he was hired for his offensive acumen and QB development.

That seems insincere--don't buy that all given Rooney's comments

Packer owner here ;) . What are the thoughts of the Eagle fans here about Gannon's acumen?

It was a frosty relationship between Gannon and Birds' fans. The D did well while he was DC, and he was highly respected across the NFL. But the fans felt the D was too soft (at times), and Gannon was blamed for a lot of that (by fans, at the Linc and on sports radio). He seemed to have really thin skin, and as a result his relationship with the fanbase was pretty rocky. Looking back, I think it was a combo of fans overreacting, and Gannon being somewhat immature. Overall, his schemes were sound, and as the talent on the roster got better the Birds' D also got better.
