start the bidding at .99 cents? I expect that bid to easily be around 5K...Its good PR, and the "head coach" isnt really going to do much- not to mention the Spring Game is just a damn scrimmage....

That was just a ****** take on whats going on in the big picture for MSU Football

Having done some freelance sportswriting, I see where he's coming from. I've heard more than one sportswriter mention that they're not fond of these types of stories (whether it's fan promotional things or homecoming events) because they're nothing but fluff pieces-- non-stories that break no new ground and are essentially useless.

Locke admits as such:

I'm not emotional, just incredulous. No extra media is going to cover this because of the "coach for a day," and nobody will interviewing this person (at least, not the beat writers). If it raises money, great. And I hope dad is right, in that the "coach" won't do much actual coaching.

2HD, like KV, doesn't have anything vested in MSU to be interested in promotional things such as this; accordingly, he believes he can speak his mind about this, and be a bit snarky given his opinions about promotional events such as MSU's "Coach for a Day."

Incidentally, I wonder what would happen if the person who made the winning insisted that 2HD be the "Coach of the Day?" That'd be almost better than Coach34 being CotD. Actually, that would be better.

it's hard for me to believe the guy has a job reporting. There are dozens of guys on this board that are better writers and most of them are more objective.

If I was Byrne, I'd blackball 2HD.

I don't expect any reporter who normally wouldn't be at the spring game to be there. Is he bitching about maybe having to say "Oh, by the way, ______ was the head coach of the white team after winning an online auction. He/She said it was the experience of a lifetime", in the notes part of the sports page? Looks like Locke just needed to stir up some **** to get people to pay attention to him again. Again, the stark differences between Veazey and Locke are shown.

Maybe because this is as close as I ever could get to being Knute Rockne.

Maybe it's becuase I think it would be cool to be the MSU HC for one day. I don't know about the pre-game speech stuff, I would keep it pretty short and try to be humorous. Which would probably be better than what Croom would do.

But Locke is WAY off base here. MSU is going to get some pretty good money- the bidding was way more than .99 cents- it was up to 1500 DOLLARS and that was on the first day. I'm sure it's way higher now. MSU athletics is going to get that money. All for letting some fan hang out with the team for a couple of days. And then some middle age dude gets to say "Yeah, I coached MSU- for one day" That's some easy goodwill. We're giving the winner what? A golf shirt and a hat to hang out with the team for a few thousand bucks. Plus the opportunity for MB cred when some jackass says- Lay off of Tyson. How many games have you coached? Well, the winner can say one, which is more than the tool asking the question.

Heck, if anything the only mistake MSU is making is not letting more people have a chance to coach the team.

What other things like this could we auction off?

...but appear at the occasional game because of various reasons-- one example being to do a story on the local athlete who's at MSU which isn't unusual, another is that the media group doesn't have anyone specifically assigned to cover MSU like the Daily Journal and the Clarion-Ledger have done with 2HD and KV.

why would you constantly take shots at the university like 2HD always seem to do. Send him packing and maybe he can land on his feet covering Belhaven.

...and firing people. For the Daily Journal to have a sports columnist, they would have to remove a reporter from their staff and give that person specific duties. And the Daily Journal would have be forced to have its reporters stretched thinner than they are now and/or go with more freelancers/stringers.

Just report the news. Tell your buddies at the bar how you feel about it but don't use what little credibility you have to bash a potential revenue stream for an under budgeted program.

Locke is a joke, and treated as such by at least one coach at MSU.. He likes attention, and loves to try and create news.
But yet, he is a joke and treated as such by his colleagues inside the paper and other media.
He makes countless errors in fact checking and then when it blows in his face he gets pissed,
even when others have attempted to help him get his **** straight.

Brad, we all know you do read this board.. and I know its not your fault.
You are a joke of a high school writer who was elevated when Gregg left
and the DJ was too cheap to find a decent writer. Its not your fault, you are
unprepared for this gig. You are a high school beat writer at best.

I have seen you several times try to pester coaches for info to turn
a non-story concerning an athlete into something. Most notable
after the basketball game @Arkansas.

If you ever want to be a reporter Brad, you need to remember
the first rule is to report the news, and not be the news. Do not
draw attention to yourself, and do not MAKE news.
If you don't know the facts and back story of an event such as
MSU in the college world series. Fact check it, or take the egg
on the face when you look like an idiot for publishing incorrect
information. and lastly, you are a reporter not an editor,
so we don't want to hear your worthless opinions. Even on
the blog. Take a note from your superior, Veazey.

seriously, if they don't get an RSS feed soon, we should put something else in that spot.

so, is 2HD going to go to the spring game or just watch DVR it on CSS?

MSU is his beat after all, but there won't be a feature article on the fan coach.

And by noteworthy, I don't mean Heydog or Costanza.

No one would expect a story on the guest coach. No one would expect extra media to attend. No one would expect the guest coach to deliver a life-changing pre-game address. None of the stuff he wrote was even relevant. It was just a post to put on the blog so he can say he blogged today, and then brag about the number of comments that he got.

If he wanted to make a news story out of it, he could:
1.) Ask Byrne where the idea came from. Talk to other schools who have done it and compare what they raised to what we raise.
2.) Talk to the guest coach. I know he said he wouldn't, and while this would fall more under features than hard news, I have a hard time believing most of us would not read a story about the guy's experiences for the day.
3.) Compare the overall scope and attitude of SBW 08 to SBW 09. Let's see, offhand we have a new football coach, a new ginormatron screen at the stadium where they are showing a movie, a new offense that might actually register our first non-overtime offensive TD in the spring game in several years (may be an exaggeration, but not much), an new AD who is running his first SBW ( I imagine plans were already in place when he took over last year), a new baseball coach who himself played in several SBW games, including, if I recall, one in which a crowd of 14,990+me showed up. In addition to all of that, we have a guest coach, which is also a new and different thing.

As someone with some professional experience in the media before getting out, I am not always quick to criticize individuals or the "mainstream media" for every little thing, but this blog post is just garbage. Yes, Brad, you are overreacting, and in the process of overreacting, you alienated ever more some of the people who were already skeptical about your ability.

I've been curious of what other schools have tried this and the money they raised since I heard we were going to do it.

Maybe Veazey can bring us that info.

...what would your pregame speech be like? For several of us, it would be laced with profanities and something about being sick and tired of spending hundreds if not thousands each weekend just to watch guys getting paid $30,000-40,000/yr (in free room, board, tuition, books, incidentials) lay down and roll on their backs like my pet rat terrier every week.
