Three things
1 my opinion of what is good and what is great. That can be debated. Your definition might be different than mine.
2 eye test. Looking at ESL D tonite and watched PR D in the previous game. Again perception is in the eye of the beholder
3. Dekalb putting 35 points up on PR in their game. No one has scored over 30 on ESL. GBN almost did, but not quite and it was mostly thru the air except for one long run similar to PFN one long run.
Fair enough. So if ESL is arguably the best defense in the state, everyone else's can only be "good" then. Got it...

I would have given anything if the brackets sent East St. Louis to play Montini in the 2nd round of the 6A state playoffs instead of Prairie Ridge.
Heck the Broncos likely would have been playing SHG today.
You broke into StonedLizards private stash, I can smell it all the way from my phone.![]()

I may be in the minority here but I thought PR was the best team regardless of class. They had a very good defense that shut down a dynamic offense and if you blew one assignment against them while on defense they exploited it.
The was the best option team I've seen at the high school level tough QB and running backs but the reality is the O line was outstanding.

Montini's Class of 2016 football team already beat this East St. Louis team their sophomore year by a score of 22-6.
Wassup
Those were Freshman and Montini sophomore never played 3/4 of the starters for ESL 2016 state champs team. The only players that played Montini sophomores was 75, 70 on offense and 55, 9 on defense
What?
I am sure you understand my post. MOST of the kids that played last night never played Montini's sophomore team.
I really don't understand your post at all. You will have to elaborate.
Ok got it. I know we had sophs on varsity also but can't remember that far back. Likely West, Walker, Spivak, etc.
Never mind I found the program from 2014
Flyers had 66 players on varsity, 13 were sophomores
Montini had 52 players on varsity, 4 were sophomores
There were only 13 seniors on this team and two transferred in this year and last year.
In 2015, Montini varsity and sophs beat ESL in both games. Montini's 4 losses this year were to 2 state champs in 6A and 8A. Fenwick (another loss) which some felt should have been in the title game instead of PN. I felt and stated so earlier this year that Fenwick could have beat ESL but now we will never know. BR (our 4th loss) unexplainably lost in the first round but had a terrific offense and until late in the season were undefeated when they lost their last games. BR definitely underplayed their talent level late in the season. Hence, Wassup13, is not that far off in his comments on the forum. Those were Freshman and Montini sophomore never played 3/4 of the starters for ESL 2016 state champs team. Well one thing we might all agree on is there would not be all these questions if we were back to 6 classes (True 1-32 seeding).
I am a homer for Montini and definitely don't apologize for it. But I wasn't trying to take away anything from ESL. They won the State championship and I am glad for the players of ESL and their families. I definitely did not say negative things about other teams or players since I joined the blog this year. And I was at the games in games in ESL last year. I respect your opinion but don't share it as far as the Varsity game went. The soph game won by Montini last year wasn't even close. That said, my intent of the previous blog was to show that Wasup13 who was being ridiculed for his comments about Montini were uncalled for if you look at the whole picture of our season this year. Our team, coaches and players have nothing to be ashamed of this season. PR was a great team this year and deserves their State Championship. IMO PR has the player of the year in Samson Evans in Illinois high school football. He was by far the best athlete I have seen since watching high school football for a long while. I say this as a homer for Montini and proud of it.You sound like a guy trying to pump up his team all while predicting negative results of others. Yes Montini won both games in 2015 but obviously you weren't at the game or you are just a homer. That varsity game went down to the last possession and that was the best Montini defense I saw between all three years. 2013 had bigger names but 2015 defense was pretty darn good.
Now about ESL, those kids weren't losing to NO ONE this year period. Sometimes you just have motivated kids and this group was definitely motivated.
So he's a better athlete than Jeff Thomas?I am a homer for Montini and definitely don't apologize for it. But I wasn't trying to take away anything from ESL. Two different players in two different positions, with different skill sets, but as the QB who on most teams is the leader of the team, I would definitely go with Evans over Thomas. Taking nothing away from Thomas as he is a great athlete but so is Smalling from BR. Quite frankly those three players were the best I seen this year. Evans won a lot of games by himself running the ball. Again he had a outstanding offense line to run behind, but he even ran back kickoffs all the way this season. So yes over all I would say he was the best player this year in IHSA.So he's a better athlete than Jeff Thomas?
I didn't say you ridiculed Wassup but there were several comments earlier which led me to make my comments. I now understand what you were trying to say and obviously with 80% of new senior players that Montini senior never faced that makes a huge difference in any outcome of a game between the two. As far as the soph games being irrelevant, didn't some sophs who are now juniors play and start for ESL? If so, it would be relevantWassup wasn't being ridiculed for anything. I simply told him that Montini sophomores NEVER played 80% of the seniors that just won state for ESL. That being said, referencing the scores from the Sophmore games were irrelevant Period. Now if there are other reason why you feel differently, I respect your opinion.

I think the key here is the actual verbiage that we are using. Personally I feel that Samson was the best "football player" in the State this year. Every team that faced PR schemed to take Samson out and none were able. Keep in mind that Samson did not simply run by you....he usually ran through you. He also was on the field for punt and KO returns. He did have some impressive stats and a boatload of TD's but realize that a Freshman QB replaced him at halftime in 3 of the 4 play-off games leading up to the State Final. Can you imagine the numbers if he continued to play?! Coach Schremp has done a great job in establishing a wonderful feeder program with the Jr. Wolves which has allowed the ability to "plug-in" some Freshman and Sophomores during this play-off run to provide incredible experience for these young men.
