was Bully mascot that day. It is said too often but one can not appreciate the speed or ferocity of the game until you watch it from the sideline. That day was unbelievably hard hitting on both sides.

I was sitting in the student section with my older brother who wasa Seniorat MSU at the time. I can remember the murmuring going on in the student section at halftimeas we were tied 3-3 with the 2 time defending MNC. When Bama started driving down the field for the perceived winning td, everyone thought "oh, well. we hung with them as long as we could". When we recovered the fumble, it took a while forreality to sink in that we had just won the game. And then everyone thought that Bond had fumbled the last snap of the game. I didn't know until after the game, that Bama's NG had slapped the ball out of Kent Hull's hand before he could snap it. Good times. After the game, Bryant came into the MSU locker room to congratulateus on the win. One of mybrother's friends played on MSU's team and he loves telling the story of that game.A little known fact about that season was that we had made a similar goal line stand against Auburn the week before playing Bama. That game was also in Jackson. Our last 4 games wereplayed in Jackson and we won all of them. Auburn, Bama, LSU, and Ole Miss. We kicked LSU's *** up and down the field that year.

but I hardly remember it being that I was 9. Still, I remember the end and I've heard the stories my whole life. Great day in Mississippi.

We had moved to Alabama, but my Dad's boss was an MSU grad. Those two put together a guys' trip and took a bunch of Bama fans with them. No kids allowed. I listened to the game on the Alabama radio network. My Dad had several stories of sitting in the Alabama section, watching people get drunker and drunker, and how none of them would even consider a defeat possible. After the game, he saw a Bama fan punch one of the mirrors in the bathroom at Memorial Stadium.....the mirrors were metal, and the dude broke a couple of his knuckles.

On a side note:
I noticed on Saturday, that repairs are being done to Harned Hall. I certainly hope the State 6 Bama 3 that was engraved in once wet concrete out front of Harned on sidewalkwasn't/hasn't/or never will be destroyed. It was my main inspiration to get up and go to class in that building, to be able to stomp on Bama on Tuesday's and Thursday's.

Does anybody know about this?

off because of crowd noise, that was a big five yards and the "Bear" knew it. The Bama ******** continues to this day.

And it was that blasphemous school of thought that birthed the cowbell ban.

Now dammit we all know that noise isn't illegal anymore. Yet the (in-game) cowbell ban lives. Traditional SEC powers are doing every thing they can to hold us down.

Taped the bumper sticker on my door and left it for years. Ruined it, of course, but how do you know when you're 8?

My buddy's grandpa was a lawyer in Jackson and an MSU alum and took us to the game, we were 12 at the time. I don't remember a whole lot because i didn't know **** about what was happening. Things I do remember:

"if this gits bad boys, we may be leaving at halftime" we stayed the whole game
I remember the toilet paper flying all over the stands from where we were sitting in the upper deck. I didn't actually get the "roll tide" thing until quite a few years later
I do remember seeing that checkered hat
I ended up going to state for undergrad, probably because of that game more than anything else.

I was there in Jackson for the game and a sophomore at MSU that year. It was intense! Jackson rolled all night long Saturday night. The Recovery Room and Montana's (two bars around the stadium)cranked until the wee hours of Sunday morning, along with The Dock and many other fine establishments. But the best party was Sunday night when everyone returned to campus. To this day, I have never seen nor heard of a campus-wide party at any schoollike that!

atmosphere. Still remember the old Bama lady sitting in front of us telling her husband at the 10 minute mark of the 4th qtr..."dear, I think we're going to be upset today." That was sacrilegious for a Bama fan to say such a thing.
Although we all remember Bond's great performance that day, it was the D, particularily Tyrone Keyes and Billy Jackson that saved the day. Best two DEs to play for State.

the funnest thing I remember was some older AL fans were sitting next to me. All they could say at half time was 'can you imagine what network tv analyst are saying about this around the nation?' That was their concern, the national perception of the game. Not sure what they were thinking after the game. People were going nuts as they left the stadium. Certainly my all time favorite game to attend.

Alabama lost only three games. They were to USC in 1978, who I believe shared the National Championship with them, Notre Dame in 1980, who lost to Georgia in the Sugar Bowl that year playing for the National Championship, and Mississippi State in 1980.

But yes, that run in 1980 was remarkable for MSU. They beat Auburn, Bama, LSU, and Ole Miss all in a row and all in Jackson. That Egg Bowl was the highest attended Egg Bowl in Mississippi at the time, and it may still be.

As mentioned, against Auburn, we had a goal line stand to win the game, and Auburn had James Brooks, who played in the NFL for awhile.

Of course, Alabama was #1 and invincible, and that 80 team pulled off the biggest win in school history. My favorite story from that game was Johnie Cooks daring the Bear to go for it on a fourth and one, the Bear going for it, and MSU stopping them.

Then against LSU, we put up 55 including a Glen Young kickoff return that was beautiful. They showed the highlight of that on the scoreboard this past weekend and what shocked me was the amount of empty seats at the Vet after we beat Bama.

Finally, the Egg Bowl, Johnie Cooks stopped John Fourcade on a fourth and one and two plays later, John Bond runs 60 yards for a TD. Ole Miss comes back and takes the lead, but MSU went ahead on a Bond pitch to Micheal Haddix to give State the go ahead score and the win.

That was five great minutes of radio there.

I remember the big "Sorry Bear" headline in the Reflector. Somebody should post that if they have it.

As I recall, the stadium was in the midst of expansion from 46,000 to it's present 62,000 and the bowl end was only partially complete. Most of it was not occupied because of the construction. Todd, that may be what you were seeing. If not, I guessed wrong.

I was living in Birmingham in 1980, having graduated from Statea year earlier, and that win could not have been sweeter. It was like the whole city woke up to find out that MSU had a football team. Prior to that we had not even registered in their consciousness. Probably for good cause since our next previous defeat of Alabama had come in '57 or so.

Another side story to the game was that Glenn Collins' girfriend had been killed the night before (my memory is fading - maybe it was the week before/maybe it was his sister. Net effect: somebody close was tragically killed on the eve of the game) and he played in the game in spite of the grief.

I know this cannot be correct because at least 3 million people have said they were at the game.

I was on the University of Alabama campus that morning completeing a CPA review class. The professor let us leave early so he could "listen toAlabama destroy MSU".

A friend and I went to the game, wifes shopping at Metro. The most incredible sounds of the game was when Bond fumble and the gasp of air that everyone took inand then the cheer that everyone let out. Rang the hell out of a cowbell!

that friends and family had given us because they weren`t going. We tried for 30 mins before the game to sell a dozen and couldn`t sell a damn ticket. Ended up saying 17 it and giving 12 tickets to some kids outside the stadium who were selling programs.

What a day. I`ll trulycarry the memories forever.

I was a SR in HS and my uncle told me he would take me withhis familyto one game in Jackson for my birthday. My folks didn't go to games and Jacksonwas 3 & 1/2 hours away for us. I had to choose between Auburn ( I think), Bama, and Ole Miss. I didn't care anything about seeing the Auburn game and I thought Bama would kill us, so I went to the Ole Miss game. Now I enjoyed the heck out of seeing us beat Ole Miss but I have always regretted Ididn't choose that Bama game! I do remember seeing State fans in my little burg of 900 that I grew up in racing around town screaming and yelling after the game. The only MSU thing for me that even comes close to winning that game was when the basketball team beat Cincy to get to the Final Four.
