Mast was running to the scorers table to check in when the ref gave them the ball. I’ve never seen a ref hand the ball to inbound it when it’s obvious one team doesn’t have all their guys on the floor. OFFICIATING ERROR!!! Rule is you can’t play with 4.
What if you get down to only 4 available day with fouling out and injuries, is it game over at that point?

Never seen it before. This one is going to hang over coach’s head for a long time. Can’t help but think of this.

Possibly. But after the 2nd horn no player can check into the game. So by rule mast would not be allowed to come in .

The 5 on the floor when the timeout was called should be the 5 out there.
Obviously Mast was supposed to check into the game at the TO . Obviously someone made a horrible mistake but i was just pointing out to the OP that the official probably saw Mast trying to check in after the 2nd horn and said to late .It shouldn’t be up to the officials to count players in a NCAA 16 game.

It’s not against the rules to participate with 4 or even 3 players

You can play with less than 5.

Bad look by Fred after the game. Didn’t take responsibility. Said there was “miscommunication” and threw shade at the refs. Not a good look…
It was obviously miscommunication. And Fred as a HC should probably take responsibility even though he isn’t necessarily in charge of substitutions.during a TO when certain offensive and/or defensive situations are discussed the players know what 5 players are supposed to be in the game and a lot times the players will just check themselves in .

You cannot play with 4 if a 5th player is eligible. If everyone else is fouled out or injured - 4 is fine. There should have been a technical foul called on Nebraska. However, the referee also should not have put the ball into play with 4 on the court. Both NU and refs made a mistake.

Not according to all 4 of the TNT guys. Different rule in NBA?
Wonder if Nebraska gets an apology from the refs? ESPN said this morning yes it was a mistake by Nebraska but in every tournament game the referees are supposed to count to help the coaches out and they didn’t last night

I honestly don’t think it was going to matter. Mast had to know he had to be on the floor. Not sure if maybe crowd noise during the timeout played a role.

Exactly blame Fred all you want as he is the HC but this really isn’t on him . Someone told Mast to check in when the players came to the huddle .

If Rhule only had 10 on the field and it cost the team a game, this place would have imploded.

Hoiberg owned the mistake. Attempting to put this on the refs is simply deflecting. During the TO you can't tell me that they didn't go over the defense they were going to play and who was going to guard who and how they were going to handle switches or what they were going to do if a player broke hard to their basket for the long outlet. Someone, be it Mast or whoever, wasn't paying attention in the huddle and didn't go in.

Yep. Mast f’d up but Hoiberg compounded it by being unaware. In the final analysis, the blame rests with the coach and Fred rightly owned it.

Read my post above. It is on Nebraska to have five players on the court. If they do not, it is a technical foul. The ref can help teams avoid that mistake and if they see it, the ref should catch it and fix it. Obviously the refs did not see it in this case, and if they don’t see it, the responsibility is on Nebraska, who should’ve been penalized for it

Having been a college official, this is a true statement. You can play with four if no players are available
