I'm taking a road trip to watch my cousin in the semi-finals of Tennessee's DII State football playoffs this weekend. His team is playing Memphis University School. MUS is ranked 10th nationally, has a 10-0 record with wins over South Panola and Olive Branch. Their QB is an Elite 11 guy named Barry Brunetti, ranked as a 4-star on Rivals and a 3-Star on Scout. He is a West Virginia verbal, but we (among others) have offered him. I talked with a friend from Memphis after the Bama game and he said that we are still pretty hard after him. He sounds like the kind of athlete that would excel in Mullen's system. His biggest knock is his size (6' even). I'm wondering if we are still in the running for him, if our recruitment of Cam is keeping him away, or if he's just sold on WVU?

obviously, "we've backed off". MSUs spotlight was on Brunetti, but now it's shifted stage left to Cam Newton.

there was blind speculation that Mullens was going to engineer a committ reversal from Brunetti, but now that things appear very promising for Cam Newton to board ship, all the Brunetti talk has dwindled.

regardless, a few maroon benjamins in Brunetti's pocket post game might not hurt the greater cause

would affect each other. Brunetti, assuming he would be redshirted as a Fr, would be a RFr when Newton would be a Senior.

While at the game, check out Keith McBride--RB for MUS-6-0', 210. Mullen was at MUS a few weeks ago looking at this kid & talking with him. I have watched this guy play several times & he is good. Hasnt gotten much interest other than from Army though. Maybe he is a diamond in the rough?? Maybe Mullen is going for a package deal to try to sway Brunetti??

On a side note, Mullen was talking with a guy over there--the guy mentioned that he was an Ole Miss fan and asked Mullen what he thought about Snead. Mullen said if we had Snead, we'd be 8-0 right now; Said he had Snead rated higher than Tebow coming out of high school but FL couldn't land him. Ole Miss guy asked what the problem was & Mullen just shrugged his shoulders & said, dont know. </p>

given he is a JUCO all-star and would, I think, be a 4th year JR whereever he goes next year and have 2 to play 2. On the other hand, very few true freshman should come into any BCS league expecting to start or even play that much unless he is an extremely rarely talented recruit, and I doubt Brunetti falls into that category. Will be surprised if he plays much for WV next year if he goes there.

I'm hoping for a big upset as I'm an alumni of Father Ryan (team playing them Fri)... a win would put Ryan in the state championship for the first time since the late 90s when I played there. I'm expecting a result something like the State-Bama score though.

The DII private league in TN is kinda like a high school version of the SEC in that it's a small group of schools, less than 20 total, that attract the lion's share of D1 talent in the state through scholarships, superior facilities and coaching staffs that better prepare the elite athletes for the next level. You have a handful of programs like Brentwood Academy and MBA in Nashville that have been feeding SEC schools for years. Ensworth just opened a few years ago and already has a top notch team thanks to some serious recruiting (and the Frist family's bank account). Hell, Father Ryan is a middle of the pack DII school and we just opened a brand new $4M stadium on campus this year in order to actually compete with those guys.

Interesting Mullen comments... I'm sure he's as painfully aware as anybody of how our sub-par QB play has cost us this year. Mullen's comments sound like he's implying that OMs staff cannot properly develop QBs. Then again, Snead didn't develop much at Texas so who knows
