5-7 or better

3 - 9. 4 - 8 should be considered exceeding expectations and moving in right direction. 2 - 10 isn't beyond achievement.

A lot of you all are selling the talent level of this team short. This isn’t the same team that took the field last year.
I think their are some posters who for whatever reason or the other don’t like Lebby and have dug their collective heels in and say we won’t win more than 3 games

All the talent in the world isn’t going make up for terrible lines. We flipped our I oline roster in December. We flipped our oline again after the spring. We got a new oline coach. Nothing in those sentences gives me hope for improvement. I guess at least we’re trying, but it seems like all the talent we brought in was mostly leftovers.

According to scrimmage reports out dline is much improved. Well, they honestly couldn’t be any worse. They’re also showing improvement against an oline, that at the momentI’m not sure if we’re any better than last year.

A lot of posters are saying we won’t learn anything against SM. There’s a lot to learn. If our oline is getting push, and our dline is disruptive that will be a huge improvement from last year.

I'm with Hadad on the 5-0 train for the start of the season if we beat ASU.

This is why i think 5-7 should make people feel good. Aka 5-7 for dan mullen in 2009 (with 7 nfl players in the front 7 of his defense).

I'll actually feel good about 4-8 and being competitive in other games.
Yep, I'm not too worried about the record this year. It's not going to be great. I just want to see some improvement. Let's see that we're headed in the right direction.

Its crazy that half of the people who post comments come on here saying they can't name 2 players on this team. Just dont keep up with the revolving door blah blah blah. Then a week later saying we won't win more than 3 games. If you dont know anything about the players whats that based on ? A gut feeling ? We have some DL back from injuries and added depth. Added some pretty decent OL plus what we returned. Running backs are really nice. Added good linebacker help. If we cant win 5 this year it's on the coaches. And I would say all the moves on the OL is promising. At least they are trying to improve

I have a 5 win prediction. I think we go 5-7 but…. If we go any less than 4-8 , there is 0 way you can keep lebby. You can not start 0-16 in the sec and 5-19 or worse to start your tenure including a home blow out loss to TOLEDO. If he doesn’t get to 4 wins he’s gone. I’m confident in saying that, and it will suck for our program if that happens because we really need continuity.

You know what, Bulldawg77? You've been fighting the good fight for awhile now, so how about this?

I haven't donated a dime directly towards State's NIL in 2+ years because I've frankly felt that it would be a complete waste of hard earned money. IF Lebby gets this team to 5 or more wins this year, I'll send $500 to the collective earmarked for football(assuming that can still be done) If we don't get to 5, you do the same but for a sport(basketball/baseball) in which we're actually competitive.

How about it?

It's wild to me at least how much conversation there is between 3 - 9 and 5 - 7. It's all **** and nothing to look forward to. Hopefully, one day we can get back to 8 or so hoping for 10. Those were the greatest days in my lifetime as a State football fan. And that is kind of sad in itself that we weren't talking about playoffs or possible NC. I've completely relegated that is off the table forever.

With NIL and a 9-game SEC schedule probably coming, I just hope we can get to 6-6 to 8-4 records. Best coach we ever had averaged 7.1 regular season wins.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say we go 5-7 or better. I KNOW 5-7 ISN'T GREAT. But by the end of the season i think intelligent people who are willing to admit they are wrong will think more of Lebby than they do now.

Here's why.

OL - been watching some highlights. Barring MORE than 1 really key injury (like a key starter being out for the season) i think our oline ends up looking pretty good by end of the year. Several guys look like they were aggressive in their highlights. Thats a big part of success. They are also big.

DL - It can't get worse. We added some potential talent. It could still be not great but that could still mean a significant improvement.

But i'm willing to bet on 5-7 if given 2-1 odds!!
If we do 5-7 and look improved. I'll say the 2nd appearance on MSU's campus of Dan has happened. Replete w/neck hair and too much coach-speak. Very happy if this happens.

I would say the 2014 schedule was tougher. But it’s close.
I would say 2024 and 2025 are more difficult than 2014.

2009 (Mullen’s first year) was probably the most difficult schedule we’ve ever played. As I recall, it was the most difficult schedule in the country that year and the most difficult schedule in the country in the past 10 years.

Well, that 5-7 in 2009 pissed me off. We'd have been 6-6 and bowling if he would've just given the ball to Dixon 4 times against LSU.

Correct but would you take mullen right now knowing they next 8 years of his were coming? Yes you would.

I’ll play. I have a pretty good grasp of the starting 22 and I do not think we will win more than 4 games and I’m leaning 3.
Yes we improved on DL, from a historically bad one. The word zero pressure gets thrown around a lot but it was not hyperbole last year. This DL is probably the 3rd or 4th least talented group of the last 15 years. CBs are completely unproven with no picks last year and our best DB left and we replaced him with FCS backups. I do not see that group being good by any stretch and there are two groups where if one player is bad the whole unit is bad, Corners are one of those groups. LBs should be solid and TN dude should be a stud. Safeties are exciting and the group should be solid. On O we lost our best OL and WR. OL got pieces but still are not high 4 star guys. If Thompson fills in for Coleman we should be good at WR. RBs are studs and I think Shapen will be good if we can run the ball. So in summary I think we’ll be middle of the road in offense and last to second last in defense. With our schedule that likely means we will win 4 games. In fairness I think an average Mullen team would probably win 6 tops.

I just want some entertainment at the home games. Lose? fine but have some games where we think we are in it until the end. Leaving to go home in 3rd quarter after opponent scores on their first drive to make it 35-7 is not entertaining. And yes, for some reason I still go.

You better go to the Alcorn & NIU games then. This could be the worst SEC home season in our history in terms of points scored & given up.

2009 is the toughest schedule we’ve ever played. Outside of Jackson State and Vandy, every other team on our schedule won at least 7 games, and 9 of them won at least 8 games.

We played the following teams at home:

- the undefeated National/SEC champion
- the SEC runner up that was likely the second best team in the country
- the ACC champion
- two additional 9 win SEC teams that finished ranked in the Top 20
- a 10 win Houston team that was ranked for most of the season

And that’s not even getting into road games against Auburn, Arkansas, and Kentucky who were all 7-8 win bowl teams. Heck we also played a 10 win Sun Belt team on the road (no idea why we agreed to play at MTSU but that happened).

This year’s schedule is really hard but 09 may be tough to top.

Do you need to known names when: 3 stars in - 3 stars out + same coaches = same course.

It does sound like there is some wool on the front 7 which is nice. Hopefully our leading tackler won't be a safety this year and individuals from other teams don't outperform our entire squad in sack counts this year. We won't know if that turns into production until we see them competing or if Hutz learned how to be DC in his 2nd year of being a DC (that's insane that I just typed that out).

Safe money = slight improvement with bottom 1/3 defense again. 3-5 wins.

Yep. Question will be whether 5-7 is appreciated by the money guys enough to take the recruiting/transfer portal production up a notch to get back to bowl quality records.

This board is notorious for having large opinions with zero information, then slamming the people who actually pay a minimal amount of money to not look like an idiot when they post things because they actually are halfway informed.
