I'd agree with those points. To have success on offense, you have to either be able to overpower your opponent, out-execut them, or fool them. It's much easier to fool them, and the triple option is such a rare offense these days that it makes it difficult to stop.

I remember Air Force giving UT fits a few years back when UT had a pretty good team and a pretty good defense, and it's because UT's players were not used to seeing and reading that kind of offense. If you don't see it very often, it can be tough to stop, especially with all the misdirection used.

Stopping that offense has less to do with team speed and more to do with sticking to your assignments. Most defenses today are built around killing you with speed. So it makes it tough to get a team full of overaggressive guys to slow down and stick to their assignments.

sounds like a perfect fit for state, seeing as how we will never outrun or overpower the tennessees, floridas, georgias, lsus, alabamas, auburns, (insert the anybody in the sec)

I agree. It would probably work at least temporarily at our schools. Of course, the problem is, part of the effectiveness of the offense is the fact that teams rarely see it. If two or three SEC teams adopted it, then teams would get used to seeing it, and the offense would lose its effectiveness.

It's a little bit like how the spread evolved. Originally and still a little bit to this day, the spread was effective largely because teams weren't familiar with it. However, as it has become more mainstream, teams are getting used to the sets and they are starting to defend it better. Essentially, I think gimmick offenses are almost always going to be good for schools like ours, as long as they are still rare.

"isn't it a bit ridiculous to describe a play as "gimmicky" when it's been a staple of college offenses for decades? I don't think there's anything less gimmicky than the option."

Maybe I shouldn't have used that word. I should've used the word rare. It's not really a gimmick offense, because probably 50% of high schools run some form of the offense. However, it's rare at the D-1 level, which is part of the reason for its success. If it were to become more common, defenses would get better at defending it.

Wofford just used it to play USC tough and gain 185 yds rushing (23-13).

Pretty much all of the academy teams run it (Navy, Army, and Air Force) typically. You usually don't see the triple option anywhere else though.

one reason they run it is because of the talent gap between them and the rest of the world....through the years it kept them very competitive....fisher deberry at air force, paul johnson at navy.......and let's face it, talent wise we will always be near the bottom of the sec...we need to have schemes that catch people off gaurd and make up for lake of power up front.......
