5 things we have to do to beat Auburn

1. Control their pass rush off the edge. That's the one thing I think we saw JState do well against us Saturday and that is a strength of this Auburn team. Lemonier is probably getting excited just watching game film this week.

2. Get better play out of Cam Lawrence Lutzenkirchen is going to watch that touchdown he gave up and know exactly how to hurt us. Cam has to be better in pass coverage and more aggressive against the run. Making arm tackles 8 years deep isn't going to cut it. I think the #10 v. #43 matchup this week is the most important one, especially on 3rd downs and in the red zone.

3. Wide Receivers have to get open quicker and more often. I know we have been waiting on this and waiting on this but if we expect Tyler Russell to get rid of the ball faster (something that almost made my list) they have to give him an opportunity. Plain and simple. Screens aren't going to be enough to beat AU.

4. Corey Broomfield has to play better zone coverage. I realize we ran a very "vanilla" defense Saturday night but if we expect to win Saturday we can't let another sub par Auburn QB tear our zone apart. JSU was a few dropped passes away from some big pass plays, Auburn isn't dropping those balls.

5. Run the ball first and pass second. Auburn gave up 320 yard on the ground last week. 320. 231 to one guy. With the strength of our offense appearing to be Running Back we have to pound it to open up the pass. If we control the clock with our running game I think our defense can keep Frazier in check.

Excellent analysis. I'll add one more big one: we have to make them run between the tackles this year. Can't let them tear up the edge again.

I think State played a very simple game plan. Keep it vanilla and win. That was their game plan. I really don't think Wilson is going to run a zone defense this week. State will play man to man. They got a young QB and very few good receivers. They will have trouble running the ball. We will stack the box and hopes that are DB's are as good as advertised

1. Run the damn ball.

2. Run the damn ball.
3. Run the damn ball.
4. Run the damn ball.
5. Kick the damn ball into the endzone on kick-offs.

You're right as far as the man to man. I think a lot of the problems with our pass defense last Saturday was that we have not practiced zone coverage much.

I agree, forcing them to beat us up the middle is a good

plan. They love to get outside.

Make Frazier beat you with his arm...

If you do that, I think MSU has a great chance to win.

They are trying to make Frazier into a drop back passer and it isn't going to work.

I thought Tre Mason did a solid job running between the tackles.

I watched part of the MSU/JSU game and I was surprised by the amount of pressure they put on Russell. Now some of that is on Russell, but overall I thought they had decent pressure against MSU for Jackson State. I thought AU's DL played well right up to the point where they were supposed to tackle Boyd. Boyd is pretty damn mobile, and Im not sure Russell will present the same difficulties. Its going to be a really interesting game.

Hopefully our corners will not be employing the 10 yard cushion against the AU receviers like they were doing against JSU. Vanilla defense or not I hate seeing that much space between our DB and the WR.

THIS

It was obvious we played a coverage we werent comfortable playing.

I seem to recall that you have an opinion (shocker) on a head coach not installing a certain part of his game plan prior to the first game due to time constraints. I guess this is different since we won, eh?

1. Screens are good. We also should be able to run some draws effectively. Zone read is also good against hard rushing DE's, thats exactly what it was created to take advantage of- Could Dak play a bigger a role this week?

2. I think Cam will be fine. Not really worried here

3. Lots of concern here still

4. Wont be much zone played Saturday

5. Yep- we have to run the football effectively and hit some big plays on passes

6. Confuse Frazier- with all experience on D, we should be able to give him looks to confuse and create some turnovers

no sacks. that one guy was abusing our tackles some, but he is not a regular SWAC player. our starting guards played one series. We rotated tackles all night. not that worried.

big difference

We wont play a straight cover 2 zone but for maybe 5% of the time this season- if that much

Zone offense in basketball is something that done nearly every game

I'm not sure how you can say this seeing as they had zero sacks or QB hurries.

Bigger difference: One was Mullen. The other was Stansbury.

I actually felt like they got pretty good pressure on Russell at times too. LeBeau or whatever that ends name was--but I think he was pretty good and at one point the announcers said (take from that what you will) that he had NFL potential. I worry Auburn's DEs could break Russell.

Use our timeouts and challenge obvious touchdowns that didn't initially get called as such.

If we run straight at them it might work...it would probably work better if we ran some misdirection...but we probably won't.

Playing straight man could also hurt us. Even though this is a "pro" style offense if our LBs are dropping in coverage to cover slots, TE's or RBs Auburn is going to use bootlegs to move the pocket outside the tackles to create extendee plays and if said coverage is downfield Frazier can & will hurt us w/ his feet. I think mixing our coverages (zone boundary blitzes or field side blitzes) are going to be the way to rattle him. Gonna be hard to catch them off guard if we blitz him like we did jsu's qb.

I think our gameplan offensively should be pretty simple. Run it down their throats until they stop it and if they continue to line up a ton of guys in the box, take a shot at some long shots to Morrow. Don't get cute and try the long crossing routes and stuff that can lead to a sack, tipped ball, etc.

I don't think they can stop our ground game and the last thing we need is drive killers or turnovers trying to get cute early.

Defensively i think we'll continue to play a little soft. Protect the edges and the big pass plan and make their qb prove he can march it down the field in small chunks. It's not my defensive preference, but i think it's what we'll see early
