All due respect to Rochester but the 5A state champion will be from the North, Saint Rita, Sterling, Sycamore, Montini or JCA,
5A much tougher than 4A IMO

1. I don't hate Rochester, and few do. The complaints about them were for not petitioning up
2. Their coaching staff is definitely top 10, maybe 5, in the state
3. Who's writing them off?

Response to your points:

1. Wouldn't have to petition up if the "Success Adjustment" applied to all. Not in favor of the Adjustment at all, since it punishes success. However, if you are going to have it, then apply it to everyone.

P.S. Actually, I'm kind of glad that Rochester has had their run in 4A. It demonstrates for all to see the IHSA members' obvious bias against Catholic Schools. Instead of some public schools coaching their players up, which Rochester has shown can be done, they prefer to punish their Catholic competition. Shame on them for doing that to a bunch of 15 to 17 year-old kids!

2. No comment.

I did and disagree. I'm actually a big Rochester fan and enjoy watching them in the summer in 7 on 7 and love their coach

But I don't think this Rochester team is as good as past teams. JCA controls the clock and keeps the ball away from the Rochester offense. JCA wins this game by 17.

OK. I do agree that this year's team is not as good, at least defensively, as some past teams. Perhaps keeping the ball away from their offense is the key. If JCA should win, I'm not sure of the point spread, but again, I'll defer to you. I do know for sure that the host for the semifinal will play a role in who wins. Based on my reconsideration of the South Bracket, I'll even shock you by saying that JCA has the easiest path to the semifinal. I see a couple of teams in their group of 8 perhaps giving the Rockets at least some competition. Can't say the same for JCA's group giving them any competition. See, I can be reasonable.

Spot on as usual, JCHillmen. I will say, though, in the next few years (2020 & 2021) JCA has a chance to approach the levels of some of their teams from the early to mid 2000's. Their current Frosh to Junior talent level is very, very good.
Idk bout the freshman unless they had alot playing up. Not overly impressive against Rita or Rice.

All due respect to both Rochester and JCA but there’s a good possibility of both those games going through Morris at home if Morris beats SHG and as JC knows that’s no easy place to play if memory serves me correct JC is 0-2 in Morris.

That's why wish they'd do 1-32. Chance to do some different traveling is fun part of the playoffs.
This probably be only time Rita be in 5a for awhile. So a game at Morris never be happening.

I think Morris would be a tough out for anyone in 5a. They are built to handle a Rochester type team, especially when it gets cold. There are some other teams down in that southern bracket built like that as well

I was at the JC-Morris round 2 2011. JC won pretty easily.

Incorrect. JC dismantled Morris in round 2 in 2011. Running clock at Morris. But that obviously means nothing for this season.

I stand corrected thank you fellas. I don’t recall that particular game. But none the less Morris will be a tough out if they get past SHG

Morris player Rita early 2000 I think about week 2 and I believe Rita handled Morris pretty good

Frosh went 9-0, which at jca is basically a miracle.

Sophs 7-2? But at least 7 start on varsity including leading back and qb and two interior d line.

But matching some of the mid-2000 and late 1990 teams will need some convincing ...

A lot of football to be played against formidable opponents between now and the Semifinals.
Many teams have improved dramatically as the year moved along.
As Rochester plays/defeats 6A & 5A teams throughout the year, I do not foresee them being out-classed in the 5A South.
IMHO, both South & North are wide open.

And 5a north is a 6 team race, at least. Which is why we need 1-32
If I am not mistaken, you can still end up with a huge North / South (upper / lower) imbalance with 1-32 seeding, but it would be better maybe.

1-32 seeding is based on the premise that all 9-0 teams are better than the 8-1 teams and all the 8-1 teams are better than the 7-2 teams, etc.

What we really need is a strength of schedule seeding but that would hurt a lot of Chicago publics and/or closed conferences.

Seeding issues today are just as much due to IHSA playoff classification method as they are being overly simplistic. Believer that you can make seeding improvements with a few simple changes. Incorporating defeated opponents win counts would help.

Of course, still bigger believer that there's a better way to classify playoff qualifiers which puts less pressure on the seeding.

I'm intrigued by what Kankakee might do. One point loss to Crete-Monee, slaughtering everyone else, four seed. JCA just can't think they are going to cruise as the 9 seed - Morton is pretty good, then Mt. Zion has been beating some good teams, and the Kays have been lighting up some bad teams...

I don't think this JCA team nor most of their fan base believe they will cruise through anything.

There may be a couple rabid fans or people outside their fan base that think so, but not the JCA community. We will take things one game at a time.

It really doesn't matter what the fan base thinks, they are not playing the game. I will admit that I think JCA cruises through the first two games.
