6A transfers to Private Schools

I've heard the talk about how the public schools (South Panola, MC, etc) shop for talent to fill needs, especially QB's, from the private schools. I also remember it was a sore subject between Bo Bounds and Hall about comparison of development of QB's at the public and private school levels. I think SP's new QB was brought in from the private school ranks or at least from an out of area school (maybe someone in the area can answer that) and MC's last two or three QB's came from the private school ranks.

This topic came up during lunch with a parent this week about recent transfers. He said a NWR RB transferred to MRA and I know a RB (Langley)and OLB (Roberts) recently transferred to MRA. What was striking is that Roberts made his way into the starting lineup last year as a sophomore and was slated to be the starting OLB as a Jr at MC.

So what's the attraction for public school talent to leave the big stage at a public school to go to, in this case, MRA?

Interested in others' thoughts on the topic.

Big time talent leaves MAIS for public schools to compete against higher level competion. Marginal public school talent leaves for private schoolsto get moreplaying time. MRA just picked up a boy from MC (whose dad is a good friend of mine)for this reason. This weekend I have been contracted by two private schools recruiting my son to attend their schools for the same reason.

There will bethe occaisional big time public school talent switch to MAIS, but there is usually an extenuating circumstance.

The midline option and fullback dive/trap get old after the first quarter.

Of course, if it were me, I'd recruit some big time talent of the baseball team to play QB.

Because it's of interest to me. I'mfacinated by what HSsports havebecome. When I played school ball in the late 70's-early 80's, it was far different than today. I take more of an interest in this topic because I have children in the school system. Apparently it's of some interest to you Robbie as you commented here. I don't hold grudges nor make negative comments about others who may disagree with me on topics as I like the discussion overall which is why I joined and began posting here.

MSU and USM appear tobe the only programs of note at this time in Mississippi and it would take a long timefor them to reach the LSU and Bama levels.(BTW, Iwas on the roster at MSU under Sherrill). Hence I tend to only talk about either MSUand/or HS ball, especially in Madison since my kids are here. HS ball is my main topic of discussion right now as my kids will beentering the system soon.

So what's your intellectual assessment on the topic? The reason I ask, is in the past 5 years, I don't recall studtalent leaving 6A for private schools. Roberts is a stud who, ifhe continues to develop, will play on Saturdays even though his onlydrawback is height. But hey, Sam Mills wasn't as tall as Roberts, but Sam didn't hit as hard as Roberts whenat theHS level.

Also wondering if the allure to 6A is not as strong now compared to private schools (i.e. the QB from private school who justcommitted to Ole Miss). Maybe it's just the pendelum swinging the other way.

My outlook on MC is they will again win the region, but will drop 2-3 games with one possibly in Region play. They will notmake it to the dance this season, even though they have a large and talented Jr class. South Panola will either go undefeated or have one loss (Hoover). Their QB is very good and Connor is a shut down player on defense. One of the dad's of a SP player said the big difference between the two programs is development of depth. MC is heavy focus on the 1's withvery little time on the 2's and no time on others. SP also starts the practice season in spring with no guaranteed positions and is heavy on competing for the position. MC does some drills, but the coaches already have their minds set oncertain players. The SP dad and Ihave been friends for years and attended both schools games and practices. The only difference this year is that his son is playing at SP and mine are just entering the program.

Again, justengaging in friendly debate until September rolls around and can talk aboutcollege football. Work haskept me from watching as many MSU practices this year asprevious. Also, my screen name is the only thing that is new. Getting older and couldn't access my old one.

Were on the roster at MSU under JWS? That's one hell of a sabbatical. Did I misread that?

People think that the private schools aren't as good because they see a bunch of white kids out there and assume that they can't play. That's the root of it. I think some players are going to private schools because now that they've played and beat public schools at least on a respectable rate, that stigma is going away.

MC loses because they lack toughness in general. Lack of competition within the program may be why. I could say that Bobby Hall sucks for the 50 millionth time, but I think I've made my point. It's sad that MC has wasted their program with him. They could be so much better. How they beat West Monroe last year- I'll never figure that one out.

I think the football program could take off after Hall leaves much like the baseball program started to flourish after Mike Rosamond left. A bad coach can take MC to the playoffs every year- Ted Taylor proved that. A good/great coach can win championships.

It sounds like you know the answer to your own question. You apparently have a good idea about what is going on at MC. If you don't know or understand what is going on across town at MRA, go by and check it out for yourself.

I meant school ball as in little league thru HS. MSU 91-94. :)

Sorry if you thought Iwas that old to have played HS ball inthe 70's :-D

I do know the answer to my question, just wanted to see if anyone elsehad the same thoughts or if they hadcomments that might make me rethink my opinion.

I'll check out some MRA games andmaybea practice or two before my kids are old enough to play.

I actually like Hall as a person and he has brought some good things to MC. MChas avery good baseball coach and a great fastpitch softball coach. I do think the jumbotron is a bit much and will most likely validate the view most have about the city of Madison.
