What with the Denounce thread going on, I figured it'd be apropos to link to Ed Hinton's 1991 Sports Illustrated article about the State - Ole Miss rivalry.

Here you go: Link.

Thanks ... good to remember the past

and 'what' makes us different even today ...

"But even as Confederate flags were becoming more emblematic of virulent racism than of valor and mourning, the Rebel faithful continued to cling to their symbols."</SPAN></SPAN>

Interesting re-read. Captured very well the cultural dissonace....

....that is indeed unique to MS. I have lived in three other southern states and experienced first hand very rancorous in-state rivalries in two of them but neither comes anywhere close to the sheer paradigm differences between State and UM.

Rick Cleveland was pretty clairvoyant when he said of Sherrill and Brewer "One of these guys is going to survive, and one is not." Brewer only made it two more seasons before he was fired amid another NCAA scandal while Sherrill took us to the SEC Championship Game and numerous bowl appearances.

I think the same can be said of Mullen and Freeze. I think one of them will run the other off within the next two seasons.

I think it's always pretty safe to say that within the next 3 years, either MSU or UM will fire their football coach. In the last 40 years, they've fired 7 coaches (not counting Joe Lee Dunn) and we've fired 6.

Since 1974, we have gone through 5 coaches, Tyler, Bellard, Felker, Sherrill, Croom. You're counting Mullen. Maybe it's just me, but seems pretty stable. Alabama has gone through 6 plus Saban, Auburn the same, LSU 8 plus Miles, Arkansas 8 plus Bielema. I left two interims off Arkansas, one interim and one who died before coaching a game of LSU, one interim off Auburn.

$100 ebucks says neither goes anywhere till their respective school is on probation. If we bust 10 wins this year I think we are safe with Mullen because so many big schools already have a new coach or are comfortable with the one they have. He's not walking awY from all the money that the SEC/ESPN will be throwing at each school now with the SECN coming online. The only school I am remotely worried about taking him is Georgia. Mediocrity has gotten Richt damn near 20 years there now and the east is a much easier beast.

Actually, I went back to 1972 and counted Shira. We've been more stable than they have for sure. I didn't count Tubberville since he wasn't fired or Dunn since he was an interim coach. Point was, on average, one of us fires a coach about every 3.5 years.

Florida will be a concern after this season. Muschamp is massively underperforming relative to the talent he has. Fans like what is familiar. If Mullen has the kind if year he can have in 2014, watch out.

The last thing I am worried about is one of the truly major programs stealing our coach. If it happens, it happens. And if it happens, it means we've had some pretty damn good seasons and will be in a very good position to make another good hire. That's a hell of a lot better than the way we've lost our last 8 coaches.

I think Mullen is a good coach, but if he hadn't pulled out those wins against Bowling Green, Kentucky, Arkansas and Ole Miss, he would be on very shaky ground right now. We were extremely fortunate to win all those games, not that they weren't deserved, but could have easily gone the other way.

I think now that he isn't stuck with a pro style QB he will have a much better offensive scheme. He was handcuffed his last two years by a QB that didn't for his philosophy. We will see.
