gutted and filleted (but that's why i like this board)......below in a thompson thread there is a comment where somebody is surprised a black kid would feel at home at ole miss. the simple fact is that ole miss has a great mix of black and white kids..relations on campus and treatment of the african american students and athletes is as good as it is anywhere in the country and esp for football players our coaching staff is well balanced and all love ole miss and oxford. i realize all the blather about ole miss and the riot and the symbols that goes on esp on msu boards. i would hope that most of it is just smack because if you really believe it then you're exposing great ignorance about ole miss. let me hasten to add that ole miss folks who really believe msu is full of backwoods redneck hicks who learn cow milking are just as ignorant..... i suppose most of you guys haven't been on the ole miss campus in yrs if ever like most of our folks haven't been on the msu campus in yrs so its understandable. but to suggest that it is surprising fora kid like carlos (and many others) to make that statement is simply to be uninformed and out of the loop if it is a serious statement.

now flame away if you must but read the comments by many of our recruits and frankly lots that we get visits out of but don't finally get....and you will see a constant flow of comments about the atmosphere and how at home they feel...even that african americans.

I don't think that the community or the school does anything to make black people unwelcome or uncomfortable. It is a good place.

However, the symbols and ideals that were ratified by Ole Miss for most of its existence make it a legitimate question. I was at one Ole Miss game this year and there was a group of black students. They were having a blast and cheering on the team, dancing and what not. However, whenever Dixie was played (and of course during TSWRA) they sat down and did not look enthused. They obviously were not singing along. Of course, I don't think the majority of morally upright Ole Miss alums or students are racist. However, there are some that do perpetuate the stigma and some of the symbols and songs remain. Ole Miss continues to take steps to make this a thing of the past, as it should be. Slavery and the Confederacy are long gone, and whether you think of Dixie and the Rebel flag (or Rebel mascot) as symbols of southern tradition or symbols of a long period of hate and violated human rights, I think the fact the school sponsored them for so long would enter my mind if I was a black student making a college decision.

All that said, when you boil it down to just the people, we are no different. There are good people and bad people and I don't necessarily believe that there are more bad (read: racist) people at Ole Miss then there are at State.

You are the same poster that posts some of the worst MSUx drivel there is on the Spirit and you are also the poster that says we can only get Defensive players and RB at MSUx because QBs are white and typically smarter and therefore know better than to go to Starksville.... so I really don't think you starting some race baiting thread is appropriate.

We ring cowbells and we get labeled as rednecks. You call yourself the Ole Miss Rebels (among other things) and you get labeled racists.

It's pretty easy. May not be fair. But, it's not like either label is coming from out of nowhere either.

I just think you're a dumbass. What is the point of this thread? You're trying to tell us that African American students have a nice college experience at UM? No one gives a ****.

i do post msu smack on the reb boards and do some here. that's part of the fun of the internet...but i also commented on that difference in my post. there is a world of diff in what i may say about msu in fun and what i know to be true. i'll be happy to diss your second class education in a smack battle but i know msu is a very good school, esp in the math and science areas. so i can seperate the "fun smack" from the "truth" .

i have said one of the issues with msu recruiting qbs is that they typically are too smart to go to msu...that is smack talk and IMO pretty good. i do NOT recall ever saying it was a black white issue... just a brains issue and since our most prominent current qb candidate on campus for 2010 is black, i'm not sure that makes sense.

and finally my post is NOT race baiting. its a simple expression of my (IMO accurate) view of ole miss's racial situation. no smack, serious post about a serious issue. you must have read my post cause the subject doesn't mention race but in case you didn't, while i don't mind getting jumped i'd at least like your jumping to be based on something i say rather than what you assume i'm saying.

I sure do wish you and your little buddies would quit spending their time on the sixpack trying to prove to everyone the beauty of everything that is Ole Miss. Good, some black and white people get along at Ole Miss. Welcome to 2010.

And by African Americans, I mean people born in an African country who traveled to the US and became naturalized American citizens. And none of them call themselves African American.

you have a commanding insight into the social issues of our time. So your telling me black people go to Ole Miss??? Who else knew about this?

BTW, if you haven't been to both starkville and oxford "in years" because of you particular disdain for the other school, then you need to get your head out of your *** and broaden your horizons. Unless, of course, you live really really far away.

Thank you very little.

argument for either school. The fact that the state of Mississippi still flies the flag that it does, and a referendum was held and that flag was upheld in and of itself shows the insensitivity of the majority of the voting residents in this state to the issue of race...the point being that it's all a hypocritical pile of crap to label one school racist as opposed to another one being "not racist." It's just a laughable argument.

"Ole Miss". Explain where that name originated, what it stands for, and why the U of M still uses the name. Then explain why an African -American would have no qualms about the name "Ole Miss" .
