The one I witnessed live and in person. I was in Atlanta for the championship game. Walked into an area where they were taping a segment the night before the game (they being a local ATL media outlet) with the Vols announcer (John Ward, who was retiring that year) and our very own voice of the Bulldogs. The interviewer turned to Jack to ask the first question, and he said "I have here the radio broadcaster for Ole Miss......" Jack interrupted him and said "Son, you've got the right church, but the wrong pew"

And the one that seems to be a favorite of Jim Ellis that he told this week. Jack was walking behind Stansbury's boys through the Atlanta airport arriving for the SEC tournament. An old lady saw these tall, athletic-looking guys, walked up to Jack and asked "Is that a basketball team?" Jack said, "No ma'am, but they hope to be before the end of the season!"

What a quick wit the old guy had. A one of a kind, unique character. I've gotten into the bourbon tonight after a tough week. Raise a toast to Jack Cristil.

Awesome.

Buddy of mine ran into Jack in the bathroom at the Hump during early season basketball, Felker era. The egg bowl was all that was left. My buddy asked Jack if he thought we had a chance. "F No" was the answer.

My whole family went to State. While I never met Jack, I did listen to him throughout my youth, and until recently, when I was on the road either before or after an OM game, I'd listen to the State broadcast because the others are damn unbearable homers.

My brother told me the best Jack story I've ever heard. I know he's not the type to post it, so I'll do it for him.

This was about 2006, and my brother was a junior. Apparently, there's a smoking section or an outdoor area outside of the Hump. During halftime he walks out there, lights up, and looks over to see Jack is standing out there. He gives him a nod and goes about his business.

The door keeps swinging open and a doe-eyed freshman walking by looks up and notices Jack. He gets himself all excited, runs outside, grabs Jack's hand, and tells him that he's been a state fan his whole life. He's shaking he's so excited. Tells Jack he's a huge fan and loved hearing his voice on the radio.

Freshman then realizes that he's in the smoking section and sees Jack's cigarette. He looks at him and says, "you know, those things will kill you." Jack responds, "my father lived to be 93 years old."

"Was he also a smoker," inquires the freshman.

"No," says Jack. "He minded his own ******* business."

I always got a laugh out of walking by Jacks broadcast desk in the smoke free Hump and seeing an ashtray.

I remember after the Ole Miss basketball game when Stanbury was ejected, he had Stans on the post game show and Jack asked him what did he do during the game.

I'm paraphrasing a bit...

Stansbury: well as you know jack after you're ejected you can't watch the game around the court anywhere so I had to find a place to watch the game, so I go down the hall to coach polks office to watch and he says "son don't sweat it, I get kicked out all the time". And I sat in that office and watched the game with all that cigar smoke, and as you know Jack, this is a smoke free facility.

Long pause and you can hear people laughing

Jack : oh really??

I almost wrecked the car from laughing

I can remember passing him in his car on 45 one day either before or after a game, pouring down rain and he had his window cracked and you'd see him flick ashes out the window.

Jack didn't

give a ****. That was what was so awesome, to me. I think everyone has a good story on him at the Hump.

That was the setting for my only Jack experience

I was out at the hump smoking deck at halftime. Jack swings the door open and says something to the effect of "anyone got a ******** light?". I think he got 8 lighters handed his way instantly. Nothing else was said. No doe eyed freshman to get I the way of Jack and a smoke when time was short.

I remember going to to the Hump in the late 80's and at halftime going to get a pretzel and coke. On the back wall there was a counter with condiments. As I was getting some mustard, a man leaning on the wall next to the counter let one of the most impressive farts I can remember. I turned and looked at the man, and it was Jack. He paused from eating his hotdog long enough to give a huge smile and a shoulder shrug. It was quite an encounter for a 15 year old kid.

Between Stans flashing the choke sign upon getting the boot to the ref, to that classic Jack story, to us going from being down to beating the brakes off ole miss during a magic season - THAT is probably my favorite all-time Bulldog basketball game.

+1

Never understood all the hate for Stansbury. During my time at state, his teams offered the only enjoyment in athletics.
