A very dominating performance. Still got some things to think about from today... The highlights:
1. Hitting. Holy Hell... 20 hits, what else can you say about that. If a win and a hitting showcase doesn't give our team confidence, I don't know what will.
2. Pirtle. Aside from the umpire screening him on a tailor-made double play, a great day. Even with his bad throw from the ground, you have to credit him for saving a run there. He doesn't lay out for that, it's 2 runs scored instead of one. 2 sportscenter quality plays in the 9th, too.
3. Renfroe was quietly 5-6 with multiple RBI's
4. Graveman didn't deserve to be pulled as early as he was... but Ross gave us great innings despite throwing strikes.
5. We have a loaded bullpen for the weekend.
6. We bunted the ball today and that led to multiple runs.
The not-so good:
1. Still have to settle down defensively... I think we are still playing tight. We had a drop and an almost drop that was affected by wind. Henderson was really the only one playing tight, but we need everyone playing solid defense tomorrow
2. This was a huge win for us... but it can lead to an emotional hangover. Tomorrow, we need to come out firing on all cylinders. If this goes to a game 3, it's every man for himself. I won't be disappointed if we don't win tomorrow, but we have a good chance to ride the wave from today and come out hitting the ball well. I would make no adjustments at the plate. Do everything to make tomorrow a continuation of today.
Feel free to add thoughts... but something to think about...
We just posted a HUGE win at their place. They are a deep hitting club and we spotted their pitching up 20 hits today. Tomorrow, they have a solid Sr. at the mound that can do damage. We need to stay relaxed... come out tomorrow with the same approach and same intensity, but not forget that this isn't UCA and this team has won a lot of games with their backs against the wall. Keys for tomorrow:
- Relaxed. Don't beat ourselves. On defense, at the plate, on the mound... no tight ********. Tight ******** lead to mistakes and errors, errors have hurt us so bad all year. Make them earn everything.
- Quick hook with Pollo. Ride him until he walks 2 in a row, or puts 2 on base in a row.
- Confidence... not comfortable arrogance.
- Swing the bat. We went deep into their pen today. Don't give pitchers a chance to settle down and put pressure on their defense to make plays.
- Don't abandon small-ball. We used it well today... small ball (bunting and sacrifices) was a huge asset for us today... resulted in at least 5-6 runs.
Tomorrow is our game 6 when we are up in a series 3-2... time to put it away. Don't let it get to a game 7. the winner of the first game moves on 77% of the time in Super Regional play.
And, as always, Hail Damn State.
