back when Rusty Hampton, who I think is still the sports editor, was the beat writer covering MSU. He openly hated MSU and Starkville and would tell you at the drop of a hat just like he did to me at a CL Christmas party many moons ago. He also never let an opportunity slide by to take shots at Jackie Sherrill. I remember one particular article he wrote during the NCAA investigation that started "Jackie came to MSU in 1991 and the cheating soon followed". Hampton made a name for himself exposing cheating at Kentucky and bringing Hal Mumme down before he came here, and he was hell-bent-determined he was going to do the same thing at State with Jackie.

Having said all that, I don't have a problem with Kyle. I think he does a great job.

Then, about the same time, you had the guy at the Sun-Herald who took every opportunity to make malicious statements regarding Sherrill and State.

I have never thought there was a paper wide conspriracy. However, it would not suprise me if some writers received incentives from our adversaries to write in a certain manner.

I held the Veazey hiring against Hampton for quite a while. Just the thought of an Ole Miss grad covering State galled me to no end, but I've come to respect Veazey's coverage of us. As a matter of fact, since most State fans, including myself have come to like Veazey, I'm surprised he hasn't been reassigned. That would be classic Hampton.</p>

I happen to be friends with Rusty Hampton, and even I will tell you that he is a dickhead. He's just a jackass. Period.

Rick Cleveland is a good guy. Some think he is an Ole Miss homer, but that isn't necessarily true. He is a Manning family homer. He thinks Archie, Peyton, and Eli hung the moon. They can do no wrong in his eyes. That often gives him an Ole Miss slant.

Everything else is just paranoia on the part of MSU fans.

...because David Brandt's only been covering Ole Miss for a year, and the Clarion-Ledger uses the Hattiesburg American's USM beat reporter which I don't believe will change in the foreseeable future.

What's more likely is that KV will eventually become bored and want to see where he could go. Considering that he's gotten national recognition for his work, I would not be surprised to see him go elsewhere within the next couple years, and I'll be disappointed when that happens.

He was beat writer when Bob Tyler was coach. They got into a fight after we lost to Fla 24-22 in post game press conference in 1977 when Patterson accused Tyler of bad coaching and they got into a shouting match where Tyler wrote his high school record (91-12) on the blackboard. A sports illustrated reporter was present and the exchange made the magazine the next week. Got worse when two HS all American basketball players, charles Jones and Lancaster Gordon were steered away from state to Louisville by Patterson the following year. Louisville had just won the national title with Denny Crum (sp?) and Patterson stated that they were too talented to be wasted in Mississippi.

Since my statements about Hampton are 100% true, I stand by them. I also remind you that I have no problem with Kyle. I think he's good. There is no "paper-wide" conspiracy against MSU. There have been writers in the past that hated MSU with Hampton being the chief among them. Now if you guys want to argue there is no such thing as a reporter with a bias, well, I can't help you.

coach sherrill openly ignore rusty at press conferences no matter the setting. whether it was pre-game, post-game, mid-week, etc... rusty would ask a question and coach would ignore him and ask if anyone else had questions. it was brutal. if rusty hated coach sherrill i can assure you that the feeling was incredibly mutual.

You are right on the money. But, Hampton does hate State and Ole Miss, and he's really a DICK. As a matter of fact, I believe Hampton has sucked a cock or 10. All reporters hated Sherrill, except Suckyou Smith. The C-L wants to make news, not report it. Hampton loves controversey because it sells papers and has people talking about what was in the ledger. But, if you really look at the ledger's sports section, it is amongst the poorest in the country.
