Former NFL GM says he would draft Baker Mayfield to be franchise quarterback
Former NFL general manager Scot McCloughan appears to be a big fan of Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield.
McCloughan joined Doug Gottlieb’s show on FOX Sports Radio and was asked who he would pick to lead his franchise in next year’s draft.
McCloughan said Mayfield without any hesitation.
Gottlieb seemed surprised by McCloughan’s answer. Gottlieb thought Mayfield was great in Oklahoma’s win against Ohio State, but didn’t think he played well against Texas, despite completing 17-of-27 attempts and recording 302 passing yards and 2 touchdowns in a win over the Longhorns.
“What about Baker Mayfield do you like?” Gottlieb asked McCloughan.
The former 49ers general manager replied, “He reminds me of a shorter version of Brett Favre.”
Gottlieb then asked if Mayfield had an arm like Favre.
“Tough guy. Oh yeah, he can throw it,” McCloughan said in response. “And he’s very confident and he’s not afraid whatsoever, whatsoever. He’s a battler. And I know saying Brett Favre is a big name and I was around him for a while, but he’s … this guy has talent.”
Mayfield will be entering a loaded 2018 quarterback class with the likes of Oklahoma State’s Mason Rudolph, UCLA’s Josh Rosen, Wyoming’s Josh Allen, USC’s Sam Darnold and Washington State’s Luke Falk all vying to be an NFL franchise’s next star at quarterback.
The 2018 NFL Draft will be held in Arlington, Texas, at AT&T Stadium, meaning Mayfield won’t have to go far to hear his name called.
