A quick addendum to the Gottfried/Stansbury poll that I haven't seen mentioned....

....even if you take away the names (as Coach is whining about), a very relevant piece of information is recent trends.

The past two seasons: Stans - 44-25 overall, 20-12 SEC, 1 Nit Semifinals, 1 NCAA 2nd Round, 2 West Championships. Gottfried - 37-28 overall, 12-20 SEC, 1 Nit first round, 0 NCAA, 0 West Championships.

Cumulative record is just a piece of the puzzle. Recent history is a very big factor. Gottfried is obviously on a downward spiral, a la late Jackie. Nobody in their right mind would want that coach.

that I found interesting is that even with Gottfried's trip to the Sweet 16/Elite 8, fans at other schools thought we generally got farther in the tournament than Alabama did. Which, to me, proves that unless you get to the Final Four, what round you reach in a particular tournament isn't that big of a deal.

And even with that one tournament run under his belt, Gottfried's all-time NCAA record is 5-5 while Stans' is 4-5.

While fans of the particular school cares about the Sweet 16 and Elite 8, nobody else does. Certainly 3 years down the road nobody remembers that so and so made a run to the Elite 8. Does anyone talk about our Sweet 16 in 1995? Now, what about our Final Four the next year?

You are also dead on about their Tourney records. If you take out that one year run for Gottfried, his record is 2-4. It appears that there is an anomoly and it was the 2004 NCAA Tourney. The next season he had a great team and lost in the first round. They lost in the second round in 2002.</p>

For him to say he rather have Gottfried than Stans is just ridiculous, uninformed and ignorant. Why am I not surprised?

who is available/willing to come to starkville.

if state had a program with the past few years like auburn, then had a coaching vacancy, and had the chance of taking stans or gottfried; i'd vote for stans.
personally, i am content with Stans.

I wanted Gottfried as coach- I always said i preferred Gottfried's success over Ricky's. I still feel the Elite 8 trumps SEC West titles

And aGAIN, on the Tulane board, where they didnt know the names, people said their careers were about equal and there was no preference. It was an even pick

was to counter Coach's possible claim that Gottfried is a better coach than Stansbury. So between the 2, if I were to hire a HC right now, I would choose Stansbury.

"Ricky averages less than 1 more win than Gottfried in the SEC the last 10 years- but Gottfried has an Elite 8 and a Sweet 16 at two different schools

I would hire Ricky based on recent trends and the fact that he isnt a douchebag

If Ricky is able to get this team in the NCAA Tourney, he will have done a good coaching job. But at some point a decision is going to have to be made on him not advancing the program with a national schedule or in the NCAA Tourney. Playing nobodys and winning the weak West doesnt cut it after awhile.
