In his 1 year as defensive coordinator there, they improved from 491.6 yards per game and 35.3 points per game the year before to 368.9 and 27.3 in his season there. That's a pretty big improvement for just 1 year.

Winners seek out other winners. Manny was an excellent hire from virtually out of nowhere. I'm expecting great things from this guy.

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 11px; ">
This season, Collins’ unit led the Sun Belt in total defense, scoring defense, pass efficiency defense and turnover margin; all a remarkable accomplishment for a group that finished 119th nationally in total defense and 111th in scoring defense in 2009. The Panthers’ sack totals nearly doubled, and the pass defense improved from 108th nationally to 32nd in 2010.

It may be hard to keep him from calling the plays. Love the background being from UCF and Bama under Saban.

Feeling great about this hire. I'm sure that Wilson and Collins can figure out how to implement the D and call plays. Wilson and Manny made it work, seems like when they feed off each other noone's ego gets in the way.<div>
</div><div>I know that's how it works in my line professional experience. When leading a design team if everyone has mutual respect and abilities the whole really does become better than just the sum of the parts.</div>

I get the feeling he'll be a BCS DC in a couple of years, either at MSU or somewhere else.

next offseason. Based on what happened the last 2 times we had good defenses, you can expect people to come after our DC if we have another good year next year.

I'm guessing Dan will continue the Co DC thing, and when whoever is calling the shots on defense leaves, the Co DC just steps right in. I say give Wilson 2 years before he is gone, and then we will promote Collins. Just a guess, but I think that allows Dan to not have to worry about the defense. Hire the right guys, and let the coacheson staff teach the newcoachthe defense.

I think it is more of a check and balances deal. Where Mullen is more in touch with the Offense and Special Teams, this allows him to let the Co-DC's hash it out with him over seeing the process. In Offense and Special Teams he is more hands on with preparation and teaching.

"Geoff did a fantastic job for us during his time at the University of Alabama," Alabama head coach Nick Saban said. "This is a great opportunity for him as well as a great hire for UCF. They are a getting a guy who knows college football, works hard each and every day, and does it with a tremendous amount of enthusiasm and positive energy."

I realize you should expect glowing praise in such situations, but everything I remember seeing on the Bama boards was that they hated to lose him based on his contribution to the 07 and 08 classes (#10 and #1 respectively), but they understood that he HAD to get on the field and wished him well.

This is a great hire in my opinion.

And it's further support for my conference retard karma equilibrium theory. Just when it appears our class is going to hades in favor of the other retard program, up pops the karma to restore equilibrium.

I like that he has experience under Saban and is a good recruiter. Not to mention that he has experience as a DC and had a top rated defense in that league.

I'l be honest, I didn't expect this good of a hire, but I must say that I am quite pleased.
