Is that he chooses to receive the ball. Every playoff team that has won the toss today has deferred. It’s the smart play. A small thing that bothers me.
I thought that might be the case too.To be fair if I was him I'd want to keep our defense off the field too
Jackie once won the toss and deferred both halves. Only time I’ve seen it happen. Why was the automatic option to receive 30 years ago? I don’t think I ever heard of or saw anyone defer until the late 90s.
No it was Florida who chose to kick both halves. Mistake by captain. It was the 3rd & 57 game I believe.Jackie once won the toss and deferred both halves. Only time I’ve seen it happen.
Kamario signed with MSU despite Lebby. He ain't going anywhere unless we do something historically stupid. Remember Uncle Omar signed with JWS & stayed despite CROOMHot take here. Kamario could be a program changer for us, but he won’t be bc we will not put the players around him to succeed. We’ll get close, but the lack of talent combined with poor coaching will lead to another disappointing season next year.
We fire Lebby, Kamario leaves. Rinse and repeat. Make another questionable hire and roll the dice.
Lebby is not a SEC head coach.
I’ll give Ole Miss this. Those MFers want to win. Mississippi State is Content.

I absolutely agree - do not ever underestimate the ability of MSU athletics to make a stupid decision.Apples to oranges. Historically stupid? Our whole football existence is loaded with historically stupid decisions.
Way back in the day there was no option to defer. You could either receive or kick or pick which end you want to defend. That’s it. If you don’t choose to receive the 1st half kick, you won’t be receiving the 2nd half kick either. Why was the automatic option to receive 30 years ago? I don’t think I ever heard of or saw anyone defer until the late 90s.
There are also onside kicks, and turnovers….Deferring gives you your only chance at 2 consecutive possessions.
Then it’s happened twice. Jackie did it because he was playing field position with the defense. No it was Florida who chose to kick both halves. Mistake by captain. It was the 3rd & 57 game I believe.
Turnovers are not consecutive possessions. Onsides technically are but the chances of getting it through deferring is far greater. There are also onside kicks, and turnovers….
And even in a best case scenario where you actually get the ball end of the first half and beginning of the 2nd half, there’s still a 25 minute break between the two possessions. So, it’s not some huge advantage where you get a tired defense for the 2nd “consecutive” possession.
I just don’t think the receive / defer decision is as cut and dry as you say. Plenty if variables go into it….talent / depth of both teams, wind / weather, etc.
This is 6 years old but looks like electing to defer is a 1 point per game advantage. There are also onside kicks, and turnovers….

Skilled at multitaskingY’all could be watching OM clown show to not get the field goal kicked but instead you want to dump on our coach.![]()
Maybe that person(s) could have prevented him from hiring Hutzler & retaining him for year 2. We pay him $4-$5 million per year to not make those type mistakesYou should have had people in place who would have been able to identify his lack of smarts in the 1st two minutes of his initial interview
We dont win every coin flip either .Is that he chooses to receive the ball. Every playoff team that has won the toss today has deferred. It’s the smart play. A small thing that bothers me.
I don’t think you can look at anything “on average” as it relates to college football…where there isn’t parity from the top to the bottom. What Toledo should do against Central Michigan is going to be a lot different than what Mississippi State should do against Georgia, or what Alabama should do against Louisiana Monroe. This is 6 years old but looks like electing to defer is a 1 point per game advantage.

Lebby is not a competent SEC head coach. Yet we are going to waste 3 years on him.
I’ll give Ole Miss this. Those MFers want to win. Mississippi State is Content.

Yes Leach would elect to receive if they won the toss.Didn’t Leach also like to take the ball?
edit: I still think deferring is almost always the right call, but I don’t think that alone necessarily means Lenny’s a moron.
Winners want the ball.Yes Leach would elect to receive if they won the toss.
