Yes, I've always thought that was strange.

Remember one time a few years ago, one player said "we'll kick" instead of "defer" and they wound up kicking both halves?
That was Dak and the Cowboys. Against the Rams in 2019. He said kick, then defer, and then yes when asked if they wanted to kick. Luckily the league stepped in later in the first half and Dallas actually got the ball in the 2nd half.

Hot take here. Kamario could be a program changer for us, but he won’t be bc we will not put the players around him to succeed. We’ll get close, but the lack of talent combined with poor coaching will lead to another disappointing season next year.

We fire Lebby, Kamario leaves. Rinse and repeat. Make another questionable hire and roll the dice.

Lebby is not a competent SEC head coach. Yet we are going to waste 3 years on him.

I’ll give Ole Miss this. Those MFers want to win. Mississippi State is Content.
Correct.

And....Lebby's scheme isn't best for Taylor. No one wants to admit this.

Kirby says "Hold my beer!".
Yeah. Lebby may only be the 2nd dumbest coach in the conference . Kirby is a heck of a coach when his players are simply out-talenting the other team. But he absolutely sucks when it’s close. He cost Georgia a chance to win that game last night.

No it was Florida who chose to kick both halves. Mistake by captain. It was the 3rd & 57 game I believe.
I was there. I remember thinking in the stands that we have to kick to Florida and was totally surprised that we got the ball to start the second half too.

I heard that the Florida captain said they would kick and the official asked him if we was sure and the captain said yes. They were trying to give him a chance to correct his mistake, but he still said they'd kick.

I dont think choosing to receive is "stupid", it just goes against the norm. I thought Kiffin liked to receive as well? I did think it was funny this year when teams won the toss against us and chose to receive just to mess with us.

And we did score on our first possession a lot this year.

If you are an offensive powerhouse, like Oregon used to be, taking the ball first makes sense. Lebby wants to run "Showtime", so he is implementing that strategy, he just doesn't really have the offense to back it up.

I'm pretty sure this is the real reason. Someone somewhere in his coaching life told him "We take the ball because it tells the world how confident you are that you're going to score" so he adopted that as his "thing" and is sticking with it because changing now would be admitting it is not always the best strategy. Metrics be damned.

Just for clarity's sake... where is the hot take portion of this? It all sounds like the fairly normal course of action to me.

He does it, and goes for it, because our defense absolutely sucks. We still haven’t recovered from the almost total lack of defensive recruiting a few years ago.
This is what I've been thinking as well. He wants momentum, and he was never likely to get it with our defense. In fact, he likely figured putting the defense out first was damn near certain to give the other team extra momentum, watching their offense drive down the field like it was the 1's vs the 2's.
