So...

A) Has anyone here read the book yet? Curious to hear your feedback. Unless it's bad, of course. Then you can just keep it to yourself, right?

B) If you're in Tupelo Friday, I'm speaking to the Kiwanis at noon and I'll be at Reed's Gum Tree Books from 3:30 to 5. Come by.

C) Jackson-area folks, I have an event scheduled there on Dec. 10. It's at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum, and I'll be on a panel with former MSU players Bailey Howell, Doug Hutton and Larry Lee.

D) You can always order personalized, signed copies at championsforchangebook.com. The website is new and has a blog that I plan to update often.

E) Thanks.

Will there be a

free lunch at your Kiwanis speech?

I plan on getting your book--I've heard that it's good. Still trying to figure out what to have you write with your signature...

You know there's no such thing as a free lunch.

I should've noted that, of course, the Kiwanis thing is private. Though, I dunno. Maybe these are welcoming Kiwanians? And is that the term for a Kiwanis member? I live in Memphis and am a Memphian, so I'm going with that.

Thanks for your plans and I'm glad you've heard good things. Hit up my website whenever you're ready.

I read the book a couple of weeks ago. Overall, it was very good and even more interesting than I thought it would be. I thought I knew the story (at least the basics), but there's a lot of stuff in there that I had no idea about. I thought you did an excellent job of putting the reader into the mindset of white Mississippians at the time which really put a lot of things into perspective. I would highly recommend the book.

Thanks, I appreciate you saying that. Very much. My goal was to tell the broader story of the whole era, not just the 1963 team. So instead of a book about the 1963 team, I think I wrote a book about an interesting era that build up to the drama of the 1963 team.

I got a nice note from one of the former players the other day. Paraphrased, he said "I was there for all of this and I didn't know half of what you had in the book." That, to me, was very gratifying.

I tried to buy a copy on the website, but I couldn't figure out how to get it signed and personalized. Do I just add a comment to the paypal payment?

Yes, that's exactly it. PayPal doesn't offer an option to define the field, so you just need to add it there in the comment to the seller.

To be doubly sure, if you'd like, follow it up with an email to [email protected].

Thanks.

And make sure to show in our 30 for 30....

...how State beat OM in Oxford 75-72 to clinch the SEC Championship before facing Loyola, since apparently their 1962 win over MSU made their 30 for 30.

I had to email you, because Paypal never gave me a place to write down any instructions. I suck at Interwebs.

True. I was just referring to them hammering MS and Ross Barnett on how things were back then making people view us as racist rednecks. Just could see that happen. But you are right, it's a great story.

I think you had to tell the story of what it was like in that era to really tell the story of what happened in 1963. Living in Mississippi today we really don't have a clue what it was really like back then. I was born just a few months after that and I can remember the late 60s and 70s and they were very different than today is. But even I can't imagine what it would have really been like back then.

Nope, nope, that's on us. I just looked. Somehow in the transfer to the new website, I guess, some of the PayPal options we had chosen have since disappeared. I'll try to get it fixed.

Finally got a chance to read the book and really enjoyed it. The game-by-game recounts actually got a little boring, but otherwise it was very enlightening. Quite a bit about the mindset of people at that time that I never appreciated.

One thing that surprised me - which had nothing to do with segregation, or anything -- was that MSU fans actually used to ring cowbells at the basketball games in McCarthy Gym (or "New Gym" as it was cleverly called back then). I cannot imagine how annoying that must have been, and I'm surprised all alums from that time period are not completely deaf today. It is also funny that the SEC finally outlawed cowbells at basketball games and the phrase "Ding, Dong, Damnit!" became popular. I had no idea that same cheer in the late '70s was actually a re-tread.
