ACR was notified today that starting next year they will be moving to 3A. Based on their numbers, being the smallest school in 4A and they won’t have to change conferences because we were in a split 3A/4A this past two seasons. I’m sure people will hate this but it really is beneficial to our minor sports and their ability to compete on a more level playing field.

Nah I don’t hate it. If the schools truly have 3A numbers, then you belong in the 3A unless the school wants to play up.

The only schools I feel that should play up are privates.
Tell that to Asheville. They got denied. I think schools in counties with open enrollment/school choice should also play up if they aren’t already.

What I need to tell Asheville? They need to appeal if they have the same numbers as AC Reynolds. I have no idea what Asheville numbers are.

Forsyth County is the only county I know that has open enrollment and the schools that benefit from it (East Forsyth, West Forsyth, Regan, and maybe Mt Tabor) already play in the 4A just off their numbers alone. The rest of the schools in the county are struggling to field players.

Edit: I believe Mt Tabor numbers have decreased as well.

I like how GA determines classifications. They have restricted open enrollment, but use a multiplier for out-of-zone students. That solves a lot of competitive/balance issues. But I also know it's controversial with plenty of downsides as well.

I really wanted Butler to get a rematch with Reynolds since they are 2-0 against us. Hopefully they can schedule a non conference game.

OK, I can see six classifications. I'm just wondering what criteria the NCHSAA will use to determine each class.

I heard Reynolds request to drop from 4A to 3A was accepted by a vote of 17-0

And Asheville also requested to drop from 4A to 3A and it was denied by a vote of 0-19.

A few years ago Reynolds was quite a bit bigger than Asheville. I can’t imagine it changed much in 2 years. What a complete and utter crock of….

Neither of us has any business being in the playoffs with schools literally 3 times the size of us. It’s the equivalent of a 1A team playing in the former 3AA playoffs

I thought Reynolds would get denied given their run in 4A playoffs this year.

It’s not based just on football success, we were the smallest team in 4A and it’s based on those factors also the minor sports. This isn’t a football only decision if it were North Buncombe would be in 1A. As for Asheville I don’t know their numbers now so it’s hard to comment on them. I do know two years ago we had a couple hundred less then Asheville.

This won’t change who we play in football, conference will be the same and we will still be playing our tough non conference games, the playoffs is all the will change. Playoffs for our minor sports will make a big difference in my opinion.

That is not the only county with open enrollment

Not out of zone.
They go by out of county but are looking to go by out of district as it should be.

Yes and it's stupid.
I kinda understand it for all other sports except football.
1a is now stuffed full of 2a schools that have a high rate of free/reduced lunch.
I agree with this. Having grown up in south Florida I got to see Miami Northwestern, Central, Booker T Washington, etc. totally dominate. Those schools are in the poorest sections of Dade County. Being on free or reduced lunch did not seem to impact their ability to compete at highest levels. Using free lunch to determine classifications is foolish.

Welcome to 1a. On top of playing schools 3 times as big we have Charters that have taken over most sports except football. Some of them draw from 100,000+.

Politically correct? Yes, but foolish.

I talked to a Buncombe County school official who had no affiliation to ACR or Asheville and was at the voting and she stated that Asheville was denied because they had reported 400 more students then ACR had, there were several schools between ACR and Asheville as far as numbers.

400? Somebody from Asheville added an extra 0 or there has been a mass exodus from the highly desirable Reynolds community. I'm sure that's right though.
