That is sad news. He's done an outstanding job of spotting talent for the beat writer positions.

Rusty has been a friend for a long time

I know he has been trying to make a change for quite some time so hopefully it works out well for he and Cindy. Newspaper business has gone to crap.

He's a good guy. I worked in the newspaper business for a while and was around him for several days in 99 while we were covering the U.S. Women's Open at Old Waverly. No Dan Marino sightings, sadly. I've assumed he's been responsible for holding together what's remained of the CL's sports coverage since they paid everyone else who knew what they were doing to leave. Their news quality has largely gone away, and the sports quality isn't far behind.
I live in Tupelo and it's been a lifelong tradition to go get a Sunday CL the morning after a big Bulldog win. Got one after we beat Tennessee this past season and what it contained was virtually nothing like what I once enjoyed. I thought maybe I'd just picked up a zoned edition put out early since the game was late and there'd be the extensive coverage I was expecting online, but there wasn't. It's not like they've replaced the tenured veterans like Rick Cleveland with rookies, they've replaced them with nobody.

Happy for him, but sucks for Clarion-Ledger and its readers.

When I was 17 and became interested in journalism, he was kind enough to take me around the CL’s office. He even let me sit in on some budget meetings, page layouts, etc., for a few days.

The CL lost another good one.

Hampton is an 17n' asshat and no friend of MSU...

he is being "nice" of late cause he needs every 17n' eyeball in the state reading
that god forsaken sports page of his. Who the hell would hire this clown?
nevermind...Good riddence.

He's one of the Crechale's Christmas Eve dinner crew. Always seemed like a nice guy to me

Went once, years ago. Pretty good, but there are plenty of better options, in better areas. Didn't realize it was still open.

Better options, but the nostalgia is fantastic for me, personally.

Get stuffed flounder and onion rings. Comeback on everything.

Liquor pours are bad, stick to beer.

You can't get better fried shrimp.

And when I say you can't get better fried shrimp, I mean even on the Coast.

We just went this weekend. It's definitely a place that has "regulars", and is off the beaten path. If you've never been, you should go before they move (they will at some point, I'm sure, even though the recent deal to go to Flowood didn't work out). I'd also highly suggest the onion rings, even though I hate onions, and the comeback is outstanding. The almondine fish dishes are very good too. And hopefully someone in the place will celebrate a birthday while you're there.

Thread hi-jack - is Crechales that good? Never been.

Its awesome. Great food and its nostalgic. Been a Jackson staple for since my grandparents were going on dinner dates. It's about to move locations soon to Lakeland b/c hwy 80 ain't what it used to be but honestly I love that location.

Its 1 of the few nicer restaurants that let's you enjoy the food. By that I mean it doesn't do a bunch of cute **** the foodies love. Trout almondine, stuffed flounder, stuffed shrimp, great steaks. You get real food that is seasoned nicely but they don't dump some kind of cream sauce, chimi churri, or ber blanc on freaking everything. In today's day in cuisine, high quality food paired with simplistic cooking methods is a thing of beauty.

The deal that would've had them moving soon (I had heard June) fell through. The word on Friday was that they would probably look at it again in another six months or so. For all those who are considering going for the first time, GO BEFORE THE MOVE. The food may still be just as good, but it won't be the same.

It sounds like the CL is going the way of papers in other small cities ... i.e., either going broke or at least falling way off, and the CL is firing or losing their experienced staff, most like because of economics. The Huntsville, Birmingham, Mobile, and even New Orleans papers are down to 3 days a week for a printed paper. And I think Milwaukee is in the same boat.

Pretty soon all that will be left will be large city newspapers ... NY and LA Times, Atlanta Journal/Constitution, etc. The big ones, and small town papers who mostly cover "Sadie visited Kathleen" and where a McDonald's opening up is front page news ... like Aberdeen, Vicksburg, and Tupelo ... will be left.

Yet another example of how Gannett is destroying the newspaper business in another American town. And I wasn't even friends with Rusty. He was just a damn good SE.

Suprised nobody has done it yet.... Mullenz to CL??? Honestly I wouldn't be suprised if John Tulty is named Sports editor.
