Gulfport becomes the first city in the US to pass a resolution demanding their cable provider(CableOne) deliver SEC Network to their subscribers. That's one way to do it. Surprised an Alabama city didn't do it first.

Based on my understanding of the law ...

Gulfport becomes the first city in the US to pass a resolution demanding their cable provider(CableOne) deliver SEC Network to their subscribers. That's one way to do it. Surprised an Alabama city didn't do it first.

That resolution will carry about the same legal weight as Obama 'demanding' that the Russians vacate Crimea.

Gulfport can make it a requirement when they nogiate the next contract with CableOne but don't think a 'resolution' means jack.

It still draws attention to the cable providers though. Makes them realize this is something we are not going to live without. Especially if CableOne wants to continue to be THE cable provider for Gulfport.

In Tupelo the City Council sets the cable franchise fee and decides who can and cannot provide cable TV in the city. Comcast currently has a non-exclusive contract with the city and pays around $135,000 per year to the city in franchise fees. So the City Council can drop or change the franchise agreement over something like the SEC Network if they so choose. I don't see it happening especially in Tupelo birthplace of Elvis and Comcast.

Yeah Comcast pays that fee. Just like I pay the bull **** fees the city charges for owning rental property that I pass along with a rent increase.

What fees do you have to pay just for owning rental property? It's bad enough that renters are discriminated against with property tax rates, but it's 17ed up if they're tagging on additional fees just to punish renters.

The bottom line is the City Council does control who provides cable TV within the city. Can the council drop a cable provider because they don't carry the SEC Network? Yes. Will they? Not likely.
