if this guy can't do it, no coach can in my opinion....I can't explain because I don't have the needed info as to why we have sucked so bad in his 1st two years...

I'm convinced he'll get it done.. but replacing cohen, even the thought of it after this upcoming season simply HAS to be the wrong answer....

just look at his record at all levels before he arrived here to coach.. what is he doing differnt now than before?

http://www.johncohenbaseball.com/about/

In that span, he compiled a 146-84 (.635) mark and directed the Demons to a pair of Southland Conference titles in 1998 and 2001. He was named the Southland Coach of the Year during both championship seasons.

The 1998 team posted the fifth-best ERA in the nation (3.82) and his 1999 team carried the nation’s seventh-best fielding percentage (.967).

The highlight of the efforts came on April 18, 2001 when a school-record 4,214 fans watched Northwestern State knock off defending-national champion LSU.

Well-known for his ability as a hitting instructor, Cohen directed the best offensive club in the SEC in 2006, piling up a school-record 500 runs. His 2007 club hit for a stellar .320 average, just one point shy of the UK school record. Cohen’s program utilized a high-powered offensive philosophy to direct the first worst-to-first turnaround in SEC baseball history in 2006, as UK emerged from the SEC basement into a league front runner.

what else does MSU baseball need to succeed?

First of all, no coach is above being replaced. That includes Dan- that sounds crazy right now, doesn't it?

But I'm just saying that just because one coach doesn't work out, it doesn't mean no one else can.

Every circumstance is different. You take over a team with no talent, it's tough. Doesn't mean that we should wait 10 years to win, either. But our situation was really not ideal because of the whole Polk fiasco- there was a LOT of hurt feelings over that, and Polk did talk down about Cohen before he left, that is a fact- and then the lack of talent.

At this point, I am happy that we are bringing in more talent, but we need to see results. Cohen will have that chance this season.

is the kind of coach that has a system and needs the right people to fill that system. Nothing wrong with that but I think he started far from where he wanted to be. He's a pretty rough guy, people who were treated with kid gloves under Polk might not really fit in to his system.

The cupboard was as bare as it gets when he left. I knew several kids who were "asked to walk on" when Polk was here and were asked to leave when Cohen got here. That's an indication that Polk was allowing anyone to play for MSU as long as they had money.

I'm a huge Cohen critic, but then again, with as much talent he's bringing in, he's got 2x's that in high school talent. Last year's freshmen class was incredible, it's too bad the sophomore, junior, and senior classes sucked.

Give the guy time. We've shown improvement every year under him (don't just look at the record).

Clean up the pitching (just the walks) and erase just HALF the errors and we would have been a bottom seed in a regional.

....and he doesn't have one right now. He's going to put a decent offense out there most years. He is a good offensive coach. But he turns pitching over to his PC, and Butch Thompson has never put a staff out there that was anything above average. You can go back and look at every staff he's ever coached, and there has never been a staff that one would consider good, but there have been several really bad staffs that he has coached. Bottom line, he just doesn't get results.

We are going to really struggle this year. Cohen will be coaching for his job next year and he really needs to think about jettisoning Thompson.

Cohen will have the bats where they need to be but I am just not sold on Butch Thompson being the guy.

I was also pretty surprised at the number of errors we had this past season but we will see what happens. I am not sure that I agree that Cohen will be coaching for his job next year. I think he should have at least another season but, if pitching suffers again this year, I think replacing Butch should be a requirement handed down from Scott S.

Cohen is coaching for his job this year

The team has to shown marked improvement ... at least a break-even record in 2011

It would be best for all parties involved if Cohen could ease this team into a regional

he will get his fourth year. The way it works out even in his fourth year he will only have 3 recruiting classes on the roster.

not getting results at Auburn with their ballpark is like bitching about the Colorado Rockies pitching coach not getting results pre-humidor.

And from looking at Auburn's pitching stats when Butch was there:

2006- 5.15 ERA
2007- 4.59 ERA
2008- 4.86 ERA

Those last two years- those team ERA's would have been in the top half of the SEC last year- and that was with a pitching staff that played in a bandbox of a stadium. The worst one from his first year would have been good for seventh or eighth. You are wrong. Butch got results. He is also a LOT more respected in baseball circles than you realize. Auburn had something like 50 more home runs than any other team in the SEC last year, and their stadium was why.

Auburn's pitching after Butch left:

2009- 6.15
2010- 5.00

Anything can happen, but with a more experienced staff, a better defense, and the new bats I would be very, very surprised if our pitching doesn't improve.

The only thing you were right about was that if we have a bad year Butch will be the scapegoat. But it will be because of Cohen's relationship with Lane Burroughs more than anything.

It's absolutely amazing the baseball ignorance on this board. I'm dumbfounded sometimes. This whole deal boils down to players. It was also players back when Polk was here. Yeah many liked to blame things on McNickle, but bottom line is they didn't recruit.

We have a top notch staff of coaches and recruiters. Our own fans can't get out of the way and let them build this program the way it has to be done to compete in this day and age.

Bottom line, the SEC is a very different beast than it was when we were a top echelon team. And the reality is that the Polk formula for success flourished in an era when the majority of SEC programs paid no attention to baseball. And the Polk formula foundered when the rest of the league started viewing baseball as a priority like we do.<div>In other words, we are now the same in baseball as we are in football, a bottom echelon SEC team trying to move up. Our stadium is no longer the envy of the league. We no longer can crow about SEC championships and league domination. We are just another team and the kids we are recruiting were not even born when we were at our zenith.</div><div>
</div><div>That said, who is going to win here? I'll put my money on a proven winner who has MSU ties and understands modern recruiting and the new college baseball era. That is John Cohen. Who else will come here and is able to build a top program? Who else would you bet on?</div><div>
</div><div>I agree with the guy at the top of the thread. If Cohen can't do it here, then the likelihood of a return to glory days is not good.</div><div>
