I saw that Joe Fryz died. Very sad. I recall your mentioning that you knew him through your brother. He was such a good guy. He was a senior at WVU when I was a freshman. Used to love those allie oops he threw to Lowes. I met Joe for the first time when he picked me up at the Pittsburgh airport. I had met his sister at one of my golf teammate's wedding. She was a bridesmaid and I was a groomsman. I knew who she was because when I was at WVU, I saw her on campus and asked a friend who she was and was told she was on the tennis team and was Joe's sister and not to bother-she was out of my league. She was gorgeous and had the most beautiful eyes I'd ever seen. I never spoke to her while we were at WVU. We hit it off at the wedding and she invited me to come to visit her. Got to know her family and what great people they were. Joe was such a gentleman. Really quiet and humble. Really horrible disease.

Thanks for posting. I remember Joe as I didn't miss many home games back then. ALS is such a terrible disease.

Oh, I vividly remember that Ron Cook piece in the Post Gazette last Fall.

I've not been a Pittsburgh local for a lot of years, so I'd no idea Fryz was ill beforehand (and regrettably have seen nothing in the Pittsburgh rags about his passing thus far). But you and BRU are certainly (and obviously) right regarding what a horrible affliction ALS is for the victim and family. When the piece was written, you knew he was failing......but there was no real clue how long he would last.

I guess all that's left to respectfully say is RIP Joe....

I posted it on the blue Lot. My brother texted me sunday morning. I knew he had ALS. His family used to sit beside us at the games and his sister was gorgeous. Nice family. I never knew she played tennis but I was married and didn't really go out much. She dated one the posters on the Blue Lot but @Vernon banned him for starting trouble. It may have been a temporary ban but I don't think he ever came back. What did you think about erin Hills? I told somebody that Thomas's -9 was about a 64 at Oakmont. Too many guys under par for that course to be considered a great open venue. At least, as far as par goes. Congressional had their greens redone one year before, I knew there was no way that course was going to play hard.

A lot of players made the comment that lengthening a course will not reduce birdies and I agree. Narrowing the fairways and making it penal around the greens will. I thought the course setup was just fine.

Hitting a iron 2nd shot into a 675 yard par 5 is obscene. Nicklaus is right, the golf ball needs changed. Pretty soon every course will be obsolete for these guys. They can already hit 400 yard drives. Koepka hit a 3 wood 360 yards. It's getting ridiculous. Of course, I like the fact that I can still hit a drive as far as I could when I was 25. Of course, I was using persimmon and balata. If they reign in the ball, many amateurs won't like that and it could hurt the game. It's a dilemma.

They can keep the fairways a little wet, cuts down on ball roll. I have a friend here who can carry his three wood, 3 metal, 290 off the turf, and those are range balls.
