From what I've read, not the first surveillance balloon from China, and that they typically skirt the border rather than enter US airspace. Could be they were testing US response capabilities or perhaps it could have been a malfunction where they lost control?

The longer the balloon stayed aloft above the US, the more info was gained from a DOD perspective. Shooting it down while over the country made no sense and was most likely never the plan. Tracking it did as there was a chance it would have exploded on its own anyway and easily found given the interest in it.

These probing operations happen all the time and the Chinese certainly learned something about our capacity to identify this type of object. We learned a great deal as well starting with when it was discovered, at what altitude, etc. etc.

It would be interesting to know when it was identified over the pacific and by what means.
I’m sure we knew as soon as liftoff…

Admittedly knowing nothing about fighter jets etc., I wonder how a kamikaze drone would work in this situation? As you know, they are very popular in Ukrane these days.
The ballon is at 60k feet. Drones? Fighter jets? Super secret Laser beams? Seriously

Raz’s stills were better .

Fears grow that China may reach spy balloon wreckage ahead of the Navy

China has no overt military presence in the Atlantic.
Balloon debris field is in US territorial waters. China can't come in, and USN and USCG have established a security zone around it. Nothing non-US military or non-US law enforcement is getting in.
USN and USCG have got it covered...don't you worry one bit!!!

So one guy says we can’t shoot it down and you believe him. Cmon man. A major mistake letting this come over the US.
Exactly. It wasn’t that difficult as they’re now bragging a pilot brought it down with 1 shot today off the South Carolina coast.

The real question is why leaders in Washington tried to keep it quiet for almost a week after being notified it was over the Aleutian Islands in Alaska?

Why not shoot it down there- no people, lots of water, and you don’t allow it to collect any intelligence, (and transmit it??), by waiting until it’s crossed the whole country and finally off the coast of South Carolina?

Last I saw there’s now concern China may get to the wreckage before the US because we didn’t get a recovery ship in position yet (despite tracking it for over a week).

You really don’t understand the value of letting it complete its mission while you gather intelligence on what it is doing and why.

Concern away and while it was collecting “ intelligence” so were we.

Are you so naive to think that the Chinese weren’t smart enough to transpond encoded info while the balloon was over critical targets?🤷🏼‍♂️

Jeebzus you’re stupid.

Ummmm, the team you should be rooting for had a pretty solid understanding from the get go what was up and decided to let it float because they could gather more info than they gave up. Maybe let the professionals make the decisions.

What were those “critical” targets? give Old Tgar the list.

And you know this as fact? 🤷🏼‍♂️

There’s a good reason you’re still refilling toner cartridges for supplemental retirement income.🙄

Just wait until you find out that your TV is still spying on you, and that the spying you thought you stopped, was placed there so you could easily find it, stop it, and stop looking for the real spying. The same with your 'puter and phones. They're all out to get you, and they've certainly outsmarted you by layering and misdirecting their spying tactics. First, they fixed all the athletic competitions. Then they spied on you through your electronic devices. And then they implanted devices in your body while you slept. Be afraid. They're not coming for you ... they already have you!

So I was talking to my dad tonight and it occurred to me that I witnessed a real fighter plane shoot a real missile at a real target and blow it up. Watching the jets circle for an hour and then one coming out of the west and flying towards the ocean overhead was both exhilarating and scary at the same time and I hope I never see it again in my life.

Quick tutorial for those of you who are attached to the concept of self-defense in these desperate times. The only proper way to defend one's self from the imminent balloon invasion

Do you really think we did not fry the electronics of the device as it approached Alaska? What do you think the military meant when it said the balloon was no threat to national security or civilians?

If we fried the electronics before it hit the us how was it still able to maneuver as per the general’s statement.

Something else to think about- we will never know what really went into the choices the government made here, nor should we. The NSA may well have gotten a ton of information about China's tech, may have disabled the balloon's transmitting ability or may have done none of that. We aren't going to be told and we don't have the need to know.

The end of the incident could be a boon for Grand Strand tourism. If I was in charge of the tourism bureau I'd go with a slogan something like this.....

"Come to Myrtle Beach. We have so much to do even Chinese balloons drop in to visit!!"
