I guess I'm going to have to contact someone who actually knows what criteria these awards are based on. If all the assumptions here are correct this system for selection is severely flawed.

Even with every option Richlands had in the aerial attack, every team we played double teamed Howie. And he still put up big numbers on fewer catches with more TDs. To say he doesn't deserve it is crazy. The three that got it were the top 3 all year, with only Henderson being one I felt could bump one out.
You really need to take a step back and see what you're doing to your kid. People on here will start holding you words against him, giving him no respect when he clearly is a good player.

So asking what criteria is used to select these awards will cause people to hold that against him? Sounds like some don't like it when they are questioned? Just asked a simple question. And backed my answers with stats. Could any one else do that? No! Get real. Thanks every answer justifies my questioning.
generally the rules vary from region to region most of the time the top two teams in the conference are the only voting parties at the all region meeting, but I have heard of coaches going to speak for their players, so not sure what to tell you on that one. If every single coach got to vote all the time at the state and regional rounds it would be a madhouse.

and if you get your stats against the little sisters of the poor and then wilt in the big games.....coaches notice that too. Wanna make all region and all state? Show off....literally drop big games against the best. Not trying to jump on to the Appomattox bandwagon, but what did Buster Henderson do in the game vs. Richlands? Show off and make some clutch catches where he had to get open against a tough defense including the big fourth down play that put them in overtime. Wanna talk about value to your team if your team doesn't have much around you, look to Randolph Henry High School and UVA commit Joseph Reed. He is going as a WR, but if RH doesn't move to the qb position to take the direct snap who knows how they do, most likely not 5-5 as they went, and he is not on this list as senior who has a Power Five offer at the 2A level, but you don't see the RH folks coming on here complaining at all. I feel your pain complaining for your son, but just tell him the truth about these teams, if you are good enough to get recruited, it doesn't matter. Football matters a heck of a lot more than if you were all Region or all State as a sophomore. Your son will look back and know he achieved great things this season and put up good stats regardless of the all region or all district status. I had a guy tell me one time how Michael Vick was never more than a 2nd team all district performer because there was another exceptional talent in the same district that never panned out and went to college. I don't think Vick is really all that worried about it now.
If you look at stats for some of the top D1 prospects in the country, you may be surprised at how low some of the numbers are. I'm talking about all positions. Stats only tell so much. Level of competition and playing time play a big part of this. Coaches and Football people will most likely use the eye test. And no you cant see film on all players thru out the year, but coaches are going to talk amongst each other. I'm saying if a kid is good, people are going to know it. Also the sophomore part does play a large part.

When we pick our all-state teams, the first question that I ask is "How did so-and-so play in the BIG games?". I have no interest in guys racking up 200 yards against 0-10 teams. As a general rule, I'm about 50% interested in how a player did during the regular season and 50% interested in how he did during the playoffs.
Statistics can be shaped and molded however a person wants them to be. Is a player who throws for 4,000 yards in Conference USA better and more deserving than a guy who throws for 3,500 in the SEC? I doubt that you'd find a single voter who would say so.

Though I was not here at the time, I believe that Vick was beaten out on the district level by Ronald Curry then Marques Hagans, both who did well in college.

You're probably right. Guy claimed his Dad was Vick's coach in high school and was a GA at UVA when I met him so he may have been a little bit bias, but I think important is just because you're not First Team All Region or All State does not mean the world is falling a part and you are not a good player.

Michael Vick played at Warwick for Tommy Reamon. He was 2nd team All-District behind some guy named Curry who of course played for Mike Smith at Hampton. To say that Ronald Curry never panned out is wrong. He never quite became the QB many thought he would be coming out of Crabberville, but he was a starter at Carolina and did play in the NFL. Vick and Curry graduated the same year and played on the same VHSCA All-Star team that summer coached by a very good friend of mine.
yes, only certain Coaches go to the All-Region selection Committee. This is the way it's always been. Usually, no more than 1 or 2 per Conference so about 8 Coaches made the 2A West selections. I can only guess at the criteria for their selection but from my knowledge of past committee members, it's usually longer tenured and respected Coaches with a pretty thorough knowledge of the teams in their area. Each may have a folder with some info but nobody is sitting around the table with a bag of stats and film. Most kids are already locked in when this meeting starts and you will see the final list dominated by Seniors. A Sophomore is a rare commodity and has to be really spectacular to get selected and this is done with the eye test, not stats.
Just be patient. If the boy is as good a skill player as you think, his time will come. This also does not affect his possible recruitment and his stats are not a measurable used in this process. Their only place will be in his Roster Bio at a school he gets to as a way to justify his place and to excite the alumni. The only measurables considered by recruiters are his combine and camp numbers. Everything else is the eye test. Size is now more important for a WR but speed, quickness and athleticism trumps all. Also bear in mind, this is compared to other College level players. A College level player in 2A would dominate and stand out significantly in every game he plays. People should be looking up his name on the roster and asking "Who is that guy"?

I believe that only certain coaches can VOTE, but that all coaches are welcomed to go and to speak about their players.
I was trying to remember the last name it was Tommy Reamen's son, (great guy by the way) and though Curry did pan out and played collegiate and professionally, you get to compare him to Michael Vick, so that was probably my mistake in saying he didn't pan out, he just didn't have the type of post high school career Vick had attention wise. But then again.....it is Michael Vick he gets compared to so that is kinda tough.

I had always wanted to believe that also but so few have actually attended over the years, I had presumed certain ones were appointed to represent them at the Conference meetings. You could be right that all are welcome but, again, the attendance levels seem to make me think otherwise. Plus, the Coach from previous threads said he was not invited. So I just don't know.
That's pretty low end football. Doesn't mean It can't happen but Grayson County has never fielded a FCS or FBS player, at least as far as the Rivals database goes back. Not even a potential recruit. Again, according to Rivals. And Grayson didn't beat a team with a .500 record or better all season while being absolutely crushed their final two games. Tough to find a daisy in that field of dandelions. HUDL gives me nothing to suggest otherwise.

We have had 2 players in the past with D1 talent but neither have done anything. Eric Harvey had all the intangibles. Speed great hands good vertical. Don't think he had the grades. Max Rodgers very good 3 sport athlete big fast strong arm. But never panned out. Plays at UVA wise i think. As for others one receiver from 2 years was a D1 basketball recruit to Radford university. Ty Cannaday. I know what potential this one receiver has and yes he is my son. He has excellent hands can get separation which it doesn't matter if you can run a sub 4.5 forty if you can't get away from a db it doesn't matter. As far as evaluation of talent I have been around ALOT of D1 athletes and pro and college coaches to know and to ask about ability and what is needed to make it to the next level. And to ask a D1 scout an honest opinion is hard especially when he tell s you what you don't want to hear. I have 2 sons playing so I have asked about both and had good and bad evaluations. Understanding the WR will probably not play that position at the next level but probably a TE. After they pack on about 35-40 lbs on him but he's at #195 now and only 16. As for our record it wasn't very good but we have had 2 teams in the past that should have won state or at least been runner up. The one year we lost to Galax at the end of the regular season and they lost to Clintwood in the D1 championship game. We beat the 62-6 and were up 58-0 at halftime. So we have had our chances.
How many times do you need to be told that stats weigh little but if you're stuck on them, here's a few more:
The combined record of the teams Grayson beat was 12 - 38
They beat no one with a .500 or better record all year
Their last two games were lost by a total score of 14 - 109
No disrespect but Is it really a wonder a Sophomore on such a team that didn't have an impact in games against quality competition passed the eye test? One could make an argument this players stats were padded against pooh-poohs.
Now, do you still think stats paint the whole picture?
Didn't degrade. Put up stats and reached a quantitative conclusion based on them. Isn't that what you've been doing?

Plain and simple. He's a sophomore. He was on a team that didn't beat a winning team. He's in a district where he's buried by other stars. He's in a region where the three WR in front of him had equal or better stats OR they were an impact player on a WINNING team that made noise in the playoffs. It's just not his time.
Your kid is a good WR playing on a bad team in a part of the state that no one cares about. It's always going to be an uphill battle, and to win that battle, you better have eye popping stats and made a difference in the playoffs.

Thanks as you and I have discussed before I would love to geographically put them in a better program. I don't have any problem with them competing for positions. Even with what they both have accomplished it is still an uphill climb for them even where we are. They have had to prove themselves everyday no matter how well they do. Such as last year we had a bad year the WR accounted for almost half our total offense for the year and was told by the coach that as soon as they got another player to learn the plays he would be benched. That never happened. Yes Richland's had an awesome team this year as I said before and would wish both my son's could have been able to contribute to a team of that caliber. And I do believe both would have made it a little better or at least deeper in talent. Good players can always rise to the talent around them. The only time they cannot is when they have poor coaching.
@Jdphil2 if you're that worried for your boy then take him over to Richlands! He'll be guaranteed a starting spot, a state championship, and a spot on the 1st team all state list! All that plus a voucher for 3 adult buffets at V&V Restaurant!

I looked for it on Grayson County HUDL, they dont have a WR that is a sophomore listed?
That is not double teaming, we MANNED UP all your receivers with Safety playing Zones Hi/Lo. So we never double teamed Howie? Be careful when you say "every team" did this and that.
To me, if you have a safety over the top that followed Howie no matter which side he went, that's a double team. You may not have put man coverage with 2 guys right in front of him, but the defense always slid to his side. He drew the attention.
That is not double teaming Ryan??? That is playing Zone D and reading field and where a player needs to be on field to make a play on ball.
I asked Coach Smith specifically did we double ANYONE in the Richlands game, he said NO! I spoke to him today about it (I work in the schools). He said it was exactly what I stated above which is typical Zone D. That is not double teaming someone. If there is no one for the safety to play D on, of course he will help the CB out.
