No sources but its pretty common sense. Payne is the third best assistant on Kentucky. And everyone acts like he is a great recruiter, but he recruits to Kentucky. You could do that. Ray seems to be a pretty respected coach, and he was the associate head coach at an ACC school. The Kenny Payne love is and always was unwarranted.

I'd guess it's because Ray has more experience and intelligence. Someone whose only proven strength is recruiting probably seemed redundant to Strickin.

we want a guy who does things the right way. Kenny Payne is not that guy. If you want someone who does it right, you don't get world wide wes's best friend.

One day they were saying Kenny Payne was a done deal, next day saying scott is trying to clean up the program, next day we turned down scott drew. These people don't know anything they just want people to think they do for some reason. So you're not gonna get a truthful answer to this question.

BDJ seems to indicate it's because he wanted to prove he wasn't a puppet.
According to Gene, from the get-go he wanted someone who wasn't going to "play the AAU game" and Payne was never a viable candidate.

There's a lot more to a coaching search than just what's on your resume and who your references (connections) are. Scott thinks Ray has what it takes to run our program. I hope he's right, and at this point that's all any of us can do. Wait and see.

on Sunday morning, I'd have to say he was considered pretty viable

correct! If we hire KP we would be in NCAA trouble in a few years. KP and Wes have trouble written all over them.

Makes perfect sense since the Final Four is pretty much a coaches convention other than the 7-8 hours of actual games.</p>

Both guys can recruit, one has HC experience, and Jones knows x's and o's. They both wanted to interview.

Fired after destroying two programs that were better before he got there. Why would we let him do the same to us?

he discussed in the presser, made a choice. I could see the Payne alternative as the Wes connection would get some players but the other alternative that he decided on fit his criteria the best. I don't think the older been there done that coaches were ever an alternative.

is on the edge about to tumble to the bottom. It's not RR's fault, but it is what it is. The fact remains that Stricklin did not make an attempt to interview Jones, who is actually a better fit.

And we might know who Stan Jones is, but our players and recruits would just see a 50+ yr old white dude they've never heard of. I do not see Jones as a better fit.<div>
</div><div>Also, "about to tumble to the bottom" seems pretty extreme. Let's wait and see if he can hold the current team/class together before we start conceding the program.<div>

I thought Curly said it was down to Payne, Jones, and Davis. Confirmed by Larrry.<div>
</div><div>And now you are saying that 2 of the 3 on your fellow stooges' short list didn't give an interview?</div><div>

so it could mean one of two things: 1) He thought he'd make a good coach, and 2) He's not a good assistant and Calipari wanted to get rid of him without actually firing him.<div>
</div><div>I kinda think it's the latter, unless they're just fantastic buds. Why would he want to increase the competition within the SEC?</div>

And right below winning is their coaching tree.<div>
</div><div>Calipari was probably as worried about Kenny Payne posing a threat as much as he's worried about Tony Barbie.</div>

since we only play them once a year. But he wouldn't want to lose that one game regardless of coaching tree legacy, in my opinion.<div>
</div><div>I'm pretty impressed with the way Rick Ray is handling himself. His positive attitude is similar to Dan Mullen's, and I like that. I'm certainly willing to give him a chance.</div>

its laughable to think ANYONE is going to get in trouble over basketball recruiting anymore. The NCAA has accepted that basketball recruiting is slimy and let's it all go on as just the normal mode of operation. Heck, its pretty much gotten that way in football as well.

Had Stansbury not had the discipline problems- he would still be the coach at State

Sidney walking his fatass up and down the court
Players talking back constantly
twitter BS
recruiting classes falling apart
lots of failed drug tests

Thats what killed Stansbury- not the fact he only won 21 games this year

Because Rick was the better candidate. The administration was never interested in Kenny Payne. There was a group of boosters who attempted to hijack the process (think good 'ol boy, forward rebels crap) by initiating the contact with Payne and were able to get Scott and Dr. Keenum to interview him but that's as far as it went. Suffice it to say that Keenum was very unimpressed. Condensed version.

This has already been said like 50 (FIFTY!) times, but he led them to two of the three losing seasons in their history. They might have averaged 23 wins against the weak teams of CUSA, but they would always lose a handful of games they shouldn't have (sound familiar?). People quit going to games and giving was down. Living in Birmingham I can tell you that UAB fans actually cared about basketball, but things got stale and Davis made no effort to create/keep any excitement.<div>
</div><div>So yeah, "destroying" them is pretty accurate.</div>

Sounds like some of jackies last 3 teams. Except they weren't even remotely competitive, and yet Peaches worships the Kang like no other. Wonder why that is. Also, you were wrong at every single point of this search.

He always had to worry about us beating him..
I give our "old coach" that, we seemed to get up and play well for UK, but not other teams we should have crushed....
