I'm sure this has been mentioned, but I haven't checked the board since Friday. And frankly, I'm too lazy to go looking for the appropriate thread.

Immediately after the loss Saturday night, we showed the "Beat TTUN" countdown clock on the Moo Tube. Frankly, it pissed me off more than I already was. We just lost a heartbreaker and it's like all that matters is beating Mississippi. At that moment, I didn't really give a single damn about Mississippi. And I highly doubt most of the MState fans there cared too much either. Showing the countdown clock seemed to be a move the old administration would make. Like saying it's a successful season at 1-11 if the 1 is Mississippi. At that moment, beating Mississippi didn't matter. It didn't make choking away the game any better. Save that for another time or for after a win. Now, I'll get off my soapbox. On to actual football discussion....

1. If you'd told me before the game we would run 100+ offensive plays, hold the ball 37+ minutes, score 31 points, and Relf goes 20-30 for 227 and a 67% completion percentage, I'd have told you we won. And everyone of you would have said the same thing.

2. The offense was effective overall, but the WRs still don't make enough plays. And Chris Smith needs the ball more.

3. The OL was dominant up front.

4. I'm less than impressed with Manny Diaz the last couple of weeks. We give up way too many big plays. And most of them have come on screens. He'd better figure out how to stop a screen by Saturday, because I guarantee Mississippi will screen us to death after seeing the last 2 weeks' game film.

5. If Corey Broomfield goes for the ankles one more time instead of sticking his helmet in the chest and wrapping up, he should be beaten with his helmet.

6. There should be a whole lot of fundamental tackling work in practice this week.

7. Lots of fingers to point, but our D gave up 38 points. When you look at point #1, it's hard for me to put the blame for the loss on any unit more squarely than the D.

8. Special teams looked pretty good overall, but where the hell was Langston? Bumphis is not a return man.

9. The 2 minute drill at the end of regulation was a thing of beauty. Obviously we've been well coached in that aspect. And getting the FG unit onto the field without a miscue for the game tying FG was amazing. If Relf didn't have a bad wheel, I think he scores to win on 3rd down, though.

10. Once aGAIN, the crowd did a great job with the cowbells. Maybe we're finally getting it, even if it is ridiculous.

11. It's over. Let's take it out on Mississippi.

Putting the countdown clock up there was a good way to say.. "Well, this one's over, it's time to get ready for next week.. RIGHT NOW". Leave it all on the field and whatnot. It wouldn't have sucked so bad if the clock was put up and we had won that game.

We are weak defending the perimeter, but it isn't because of Manny. It is because our CBs can't tackle. We lost convincingly to Alabama because they saw our weakness on the corners and attacked with the bubble screens - one of them coming to Mark Ingram.

Arkansas did the same thing, but mostly did it with letting #7 run around either end.

No DC can make up for players that can't tackle.

We're a pretty solid D. But our one glaring weakness is tackling at the edges. Our CBs just can't tackle.

they simply aren't executing a proper tackle. Not a whole lot he can do about that. These guys have been playing football for probably 10 years of their lives, they should know how to tackle by now.

tackle him again, was really almost funny it was so sad. It really looked like he was trying to lay down and let the receiver go by him, like he did a fake fall or something.

You said "its over let's take it out on Mississippi"...... I think that was the meaning and purpose behind showing the countdown clock after the game. I feel as if our fanbase is growing mentally with our team. We will be alright.

This is what I don't get by saying, Manny is doing great, they just cannot tackle.

I say ********, you don't make it to the SEC to play defense and not have the ability to tackle. That is some grade A horse **** right there.

They may forget how and need to be coached up again. They may be able to improve their tackling skills with the proper coaching but they know how to tackle. We can attempt to come up with another excuse but this one will not work.

Bingo. Mullen always says you're either getting better or you're getting worse. There is no holding steady. Right now, we're getting worse at tackling. We've got to get better. And if our CBs are having problems tackling, why keep sending the LBs on the blitz 8 plays out of 10? Seems to me a good idea would be have them stay at home and help the screen. Or maybe we should teach them to 17ing read a screen instead of blitzing blindly. I like Manny, but he isn't immune from criticism. 2 games is a trend. I believe he can figure it out, but he better do it quickly.

Considering Arkansas' offense, I think the defense played well. Yes, we gave up two big plays. However, overall, considering how good they are, I don't think we played bad. Bama gave up a few big plays to them as well. They absolutely torched USC on the ground and air.

Also, there were so many plays during that game. One play here or there on offense and defense and we win. One defensive play I recall, if we make it, we win. In the 2nd OT, they throw the ball towards the sideline, on what looked like an outside curl. The DL drops into coverage and gets a hand on the ball. If that DL has a few more inches on his height orvertical, he picks that ball off and Manny looks brilliant.

it is coverage... we can't cover a baby with a blanket, therefore we back them up ...while they look like they are in place to make a tackle the wr has already made a step and you are not in the right place if the guy lands and makes a step after a catch

it has shown its head a lot in the last few weeks because great athletes got outside on us

...bend but don't break ...we don't have nearly the space when we get inside the 20 and also the other teams don't spread the field as much on us inside the 20

...i don't know how this bunch can do anything different, they are not tall and they are not speedy... solid group in any division but the SEC, while I am not say they are not SEC-caliber, the group as a whole is not... zack smith "toast" is only playing so we can redshirt our fr, imo

we still had a very good chance to beat an 11th ranked team.... lets see who else... AU, is a team we could have beaten but lost by 3, LSU was the fault of the offense (can't blame defense for 5 turn overs that were mainly held to feild goals), that leaves bama who beat us by 20 points .... as far as what I have seen, defense should only be blamed for one game and that was against the former # 1 and national champions .... whose season have you been watching ???

I believe we've run a screen once this entire year (that wasn't a WR screen) and it resulted in a pick-six for UT.... I wouldn't worry too much about the RB screen.

If we're gonna blitz teams, eventually we're going to get burned.

Alabama and Arkansas are probably the two worse matchups for MSU's D all season, because they have talent at WR and QB in the passing game. Think about the NFL talent on those two teams, Mallet, Ingram, Joe Adams, that TE in from Ark, Julio Jones, thats some serious match up issues for a blitzing team.

We did give up 38, but it was also in double OT. I didn't think our D was great, but it's a loss on the whole team. The offense left some plays on the field as well.

I think the countdown clock was put on the board not for the fans, but for the players to see on their way back to the locker room. To me, it said "we don't have time to sulk about the loss - there's a big game coming next week."

I also think that the countdown clock would've been shown whether we won or lost - just a tool Mullen (or someone else) wanted to use to get the players looking toward next week.

The defense we use is a scheme defense. The corners play soft because they do not have the speed to keep up with the speed of some of our opponents. All the big plays were breakdowns of the scheme against guys that are faster than anyone on the defense. One missed tackle or good block, gone.

"We JUST LOST a heartbreaker and it's like all that matters is beating Mississippi". Correct, that game was over and the next one is all that matters. The next one is always the most important. Every coach in the history of the game has always said that.
