What happened to all the good candidates like Jackie Sherrill, Lou Holtz, Dennis Erickson, John Mackovic, Rich Brooks. Hell, maybe Dick Vermeil is available?

Those names seem to be the best available who might have actual interest in becoming our head coach.

Graham- good coach, all he has done is win as a head coach

Wilson- set offensive records as a OC (what more do you want?)

Mullen- big-time OC for the best team in NCAA football the last 3 years

Gill- top black coach in the nation; turned around the worst D-1 program in the nation

Lets keep in mind that every top coach was once a coordinator before getting a head job to prove themselves

Its just a name, and I haven't heard anyone say his name at all, but what about Charlie Strong. I may get some flak and be out of the loop about that one, but why can't we continue to capitalize on our dominant defense and build a great reputation? Then hire a good OC to take care of that side of the ball.

Is a pretty ****** list of candidates?
I don't see anything wrong with any of those names. I am not sure what some of you are expecting but any of those 4 would be fine with me. I know they could all coach circles around the clowns we have had the past 5 years

Boone/Khayat level suck. Still I ain't real excited about prospects right now. Yeah, we could trot jerrell powe's mother out there and match croom's competency and results.

b/c while Strong is a decent DC - his defenses are not usually dominant so while you'll have a good defense with him it won't be circa good Joe Lee consistently.

Plus the rumor mill from FL fans I know is that he's not the most personable guy and I don't think he's the stud recruiter, which may explain why he's not a HC somewhere yet. Good also be he just doesn't want to be one or wants to hold out for a big-time job. Who knows.

I think only a proven hc will work @ our place. Jackie came in and gave Rocky's boys an attitude/swagger...made them believe in themselves. An oc from a florida or oklahoma that has the very best of EVERYTHING will have a hard time adjusting.
JMO. Patterson/Whittingham ...come on down! Graham/Gill still not enough history

I understand if doesn't have the best personality in the world and he's got a good job now. I can see the lack of desire to leave. If we could possibly get another black coach to help keep pulling the kids from Mississippi that would help. Although State might not have to more to offer in terms of city, stadium, etc as other schools, the one thing we can offer that no other SEC school has is a coach of color. That could help even though guys like Peterson and Patterson would still be great options.
