Usually defensive plays don't count towards offensive yardage.

No, but defensive scores change how the offense approaches the rest of the game. (That would've required comprehension re: "situational football," I know. Forgive!)
The point he's trying to make (and rather weakly) is that they didn't open the offense up because they were protecting a lead due to some defensive scoring.
