I found out he wanted 5 years not 3 and it was family too,both his parents are sick.

Not disputing what you're saying, but you can't ask for something that you can't technically get. As for the family reasons, yeah, both are sick, but considering that his wife's folks are in Mississippi, it wouldn't be unreasonable for his to come down as well, so that everyone could be near one another? The southern weather could be a benefit for their health, as well.
