The sad thing is, this is exactly the kind of game that Husker fans should have circled on the calendar, because of the conference title implications. But it's difficult for even the die-hards to get excited, given the state of the program.

And if the Huskers have a late-season surge in them, I'll be more than happy to eat crow.

I truly haven't been excited for Husker baseball since midway through the Anderson regime. I used to go to a bunch of games every year and barely go to two or three a year now. Part of it was Anderson and part of it was the move to the Big Ten. I wasn't enamored with the Erstad hire either. Something just didn't feel right when he was hired. I did think he surrounded himself with a couple good assistants, but Bolt left after a couple years and Silva hasn't impressed either. If NU wants to get back to semi elite, they have to upgrade the pitching. What we are seeing this year is completely unacceptable. Rob Childress may have been the best hire this program ever made. Yes, even better than Van Horne. Our pitching staffs under him were nails and maybe the biggest reason for our success in the 00's.

Erstad talks a good game....this offseason he will say all the right things...talk about the CWS but we will be no closer to being even a regional program. I guess that what happens when you hire a coach with zero coaching experience just because he loves the Skers. Another gift from Dr Tom

It will be win in Omaha or bust. And considering we will pack the place with Red Erstdud doesn't have any excuse to FINALLY bringing home some hardware

I really think it has more to do with DVH just being that freaking good of a coach and recruiter. I think he was one of those coaches that just had "it"

We should be the premier program in the Big Ten. And we aren't. And probably never will be under Erstdud. Hopefully the Angels job opens up and they court him.

It's not like people here are clamoring for Van Horn-like results. But given the significant step down in conferences, there's no excuse for the program treading water at this level.

Check that, I stand corrected. There are unlimited excuses, and a steady stream of them will be arriving in short order.

Exactly....if we fail to make a regionally this year Erstad will have had produced 1 regional and a win against Binghamton. It's not an expectation issue. It's an Erstdud issue. If he loves Nebraska so much like he claims hopefully he leaves for pro ball.

Is it bad that I was disappointed when the Dodgers didn't hire Erstad?
I was right there with ya, man. Knew it would be a matter of weeks before that turned into, "He would rather be here, giving his all to the Huskers, than managing the freaking LA Dodgers! And you haters wanna run him outta town?"

Yep. Being a real threat to win the B1G and make a regional every year or at least every other year isn't too much to ask. Barring a big turnaround or getting hot in the B1G tournament, we are looking at failing to make a regional for the 4th time in Erstad's 5 years. That is completely unacceptable for this program. We have things other programs would love to have-a great facility and some of the best fan support in the country. The one thing we don't have is the right coach. All you have to do is look across the field at who we are playing this weekend-Michigan. When they got a new coach 4 years ago, they went out and got one of the hottest up and coming young coaches in the country. When we got a new coach, we got a guy with zero coaching experience whose only reason for getting the job was he was a beloved former player who was also close with the athletic director. That's why Michigan is succeeding right now and we are not.

I'm like a broken record when I say this, but I knew this season was likely a lost cause before it even began. Erstad talking about how he was finally going to be taking over the bating coach duties AND the upperclassmen were playing so poorly in practice "every job was open for competition." were both odd things to say in year five of his stint here. It was pretty interesting that Ken Hambleton put us 5th in his most recent power rankings. It seems he saw this team was padding its record with wins over TERRIBLE teams.

It's unfortunate Erstdud can't schedule Purdue every weekend. Thanks to Dr Tom for handcuffing us with Erstdud...another gift from him.

Again, if we finish lower than 3rd in the conference standings, this coaching staff needs to go.

We are likely stuck with Erstdud for quite some time...unless he jumps ship to pro ball. We can only hope.
Yep-the success of the program is held hostage to when Erstad leaves or just decides he can't get it done here. There's practically no chance he gets fired.

This sucks, because I'm pissed at a guy that was a great athlete for us. But he's paid to bring in talent, develop that talent, and win games. Bottom line.

Pro teams can make bad hires as well

Du I do not disagree but please do not be fooled by those that say " we have the talent."
We have considerably more talent than alot of teams. Including some that are dismantling us.

He's untouchable. The tradition coalition would demand he stayed employed, even if he won 0 games every year.

So we think an MLB team won't do their homework? From a baseball perspective, it would be messed up if Nebraska didn't want a coach but the Angels did.

The Angels won't care about his record at Nebraska....nor will they care about his lackluster recruiting. That won't come into play if he gets a MLB job. Let's hope Erstdud gets one fairly soon.....if so, we won't have to hire the person who loves NU the most as that was Dr Toms line of thinking.

Sorry but this is the same line of thinking that led to the hire in the first place: "How could you NOT want a guy with a World Series ring coaching the Huskers???"

I just don't see much connection between MLB success and being a great college baseball coach. I've been watching the sport for decades, and most of the coaches that take teams to Omaha or to the Super Regionals year in and year out never got beyond the low minors. Occasionally a program will find success with the Hire-our-most-famous-MLB-alum approach - but more often than not, it doesn't pan out.

And that's a Mich sweeeeeeepppp. Erstdud continues to Erstdud. Looks like another year where our at large chances get squashed. But, atleast we have a coach who loves NU. That's what matters most.

I think he would be a great MLB manager. If I were a GM of a team (except the Royals), I would hire him in a heartbeat. :)
