Franklin was fired by Penn State; he has no obligation to promote its interests (retaining recruits or anything else). Even if recruits do not go to VTech (Huhn, Mickens, Sieg, and others were there for their game with Miami) he will encourage them to go elsewhere.

One reason why Franklin jumped back into the coaching pool and opted not to sit on a beach with an umbrella drink or in a TV studio (as many expected) is because he wanted to stay in the game, leverage his relationships, and lastly provide a landing spot to his coaches and the players with whom he had built relationships. This was very calculated, and guess what, he will negatively recruit against PSU every chance he gets. Any disgruntled ex-employee would do the same if it would improve their chances of being successful in the next stop.)

Like or hate Franklin (I am in neither camp) he was a relationship guy and many recruits were linked to him, less to Penn State, That the class cratered because he left should have been expected. LSU and Florida are not losing recruits because most commit to the brand, not the coach. Florida kids dream of going to Florida; Louisiana kids to LSU; this does not appear to be the case at PSU.

I think the expectation should be a clean slate. 30 seniors were honored on senior day, so in addition to the loss of the entire 26 class one should prepare for a mass exodus of players from this roster. How they replace them is another issue.

Thus, the clean slate calls for a HC outside the program.

Those schools are also hotbeds for recruiting as compared to PA. Florida and LSU can lose out on a few local targets (and they do), but they also have a longer list of local blue-chip guys who they can immediately replace the misses with. Pennsylvania is more limited in those numbers and there are complexities there that even Franklin couldn't quite successfully navigate to the extent he wanted to (but, I won't get into that here).

And so that is my concern about PSU. Whoever the next guy is needs to be a elite recruiter, but we also have to do the work on the field to elevate the PSU brand once again beyond what CJF got it to. The facility projects can help, but branding truly starts and ends with what you do when the games are played. Unfortunately, we have to be more regional and national in our recruiting efforts, so on-field success and often being in the national spotlight are even more important in that context.

I agree, though I would add compensation to your list. If a school is not in a talent rich environment it needs to simply pay more to bring in talent.
