If we can make it through this year and continue making strides forward, we're setting ourselves up quite nicely for a breakout year in 2011. This is without question our easiest schedule in years.

Another 6 game home schedule. Man, LT was just a scheduling genius. Saddle us with brutal non conference games against WVU, Georgia Tech, etc. and then line us up to play 2 CUSA road games in a single season.

was told at a dinner last night Miles has been informed that this season is very important to his employment at LSU- at least 9 wins and a win over Saban

Gonna be close this season in BR

We just need to make sure that we hire another good coach.

Also, I think Georgia will be looking for a new coach as well.

a good hire than I did 3 years ago...

It's a good problem to have...and we also have a couple of good in-house candidates in Hud and Diaz...altho I would prefer both get a couple more SEC years under their belt first

if Georgia is looking for a new coach, (A) would Richt be looking for a new job right away and would he would consider us? (B) Would we want Richt?

He may get the 9 wins. But he won't get the win over Saban, at least not this year.

I called for LSU to go 5-7 (2-6) as an outlandish pick, but I really think they're going to be 7-5 this year, so I think Miles will be looking for a job. I also think Richt may be looking as well, though he's been known to pull his guys together, and this year in the East it's going to be fairly doable.

I think we would be a pretty good situation. His Christian background would be a hit with the blue hairs and Genespagers.

I wouldn't be surprised if Tommy Tuberville tries to get in on it, as well.

But the guy I would take a long look at would be Gus Mahlzahn.

Also, I don't think I would like him as a HC, but I would like Mike Leach as an OC, unless we hire Mahlzahn of course. I don't like how Leach doesn't pay attention to defense at all, and that's something that you can't do in the SEC- even if you feel like your offense can outscore anybody. Leach with a good DC like an Ellis Johnson might win a NC.

Kevin Sumlin at Houston has really impressed me as well.

FCS stands for Football Championship Subdivision which is just another way of saying D-Iaa schools (Jackson St, Alcorn State, Murray State, etc.).

I read somewhere that UT-Martin will be our 2011 FCS game.

The reason I ask if we would want him is because of his offensive philosophy. I think to be successful we must be a spread team of some sort. I don't know if that is in his background. I do think he would be a great name and persona to have but I don't know if he would be a winner if we couldn't bring in better talent. I do like him as a coach and a person but is that enough

I'd like to go for a proven guy post-Mullen so we can get some stability with the program. Mullen is laying the framework and doing the heavy lifting, the next hire will have a much easier time. Get a guy like Richt or Tubbs who know the region and have won in the SEC, and then combine that with our new smart scheduling and we're set up nicely for the future.

leaves this year, but he'll probably be gone by sometime in the next 2-5 years. And that's ok, he wasn't a long term hire. He was supposed to lay down a foundation and leave the program in better shape than he found it.

Its going to be hard for him to turn down the money and the chance to compete for the title every year

he had some solid wins last year. However, he also had some bad losses like getting destroyed by Air Force, and getting beat bya fewof the lower cusa schools.

who I think is at least a decent OC, and fairly popular in Georgia.

Richt was at FSU, and they ran a lot of pro-style/shotgun stuff when he was there. At Georgia, it seems like they are more pro-style/under center than shotgun than he was at FSU. Not sure why- probably Bobo's preferance?

I assume that he would run something similar if he went elsewhere, unless he hired a different OC that was a spread guy or something, which is very possible.

I think we can run something other than the spread if we wanted to- we just have to make sure that we have someone that is competent as a coach, whether that coach is a spread guy or a pro-style guy, or a Notre Dame box guy. And we have to make sure that that coach can continue to recruit well. The most important position is the QB, and Tyler Russell, our QB of the future, is versatile enough that I think he could run a pro-style offense just as well, and some may even say better than the spread, although I think he can do both. We also have some good o-line prospects, and that should bode well for the future as far as whatever offense we want to run. And then we have some skill guys that are very talented athletes that can make plays in any offense. Carr and Morrow are big WR's, Pat Patterson will be a good TE, and Bumphis can line-up wherever. And then we have Montrell Conner, who is big back along with Matt Wells, LaDarius Perkins, and then we have Shumpert at FB.

As I've said before, if Croom ran the spread, it still wouldn't change the fact that he is a crappy coach, and his play calling would still be just as mysterious as it was when he was here. McCorvey would still be McCorvey as well. It also wouldn't have changed the fact that he would be recruitng snappers over QB's. Yeah, it may have suited Omarr and Norwood better, but the o-line would still be crappy, and we still would have had the same WR's running their routes short. We probably would have been better, but the question is how much? Maybe the low 80's? Probably in the 90's? We'll never know.

And for the record, if I had my drouthers we would be a pass first spread team like SMU with an aggressive organized chaos defense. That would be fun to watch.

lose or have another mediocre year. LSU came VERY close to hiring him back in 2004 but Bertman screwed up and they had to resort to Miles. He had a real mutual interest in the job and he'll be getting one of the 1st calls.

That's when our athletic dept./boosters need to show how big their balls are and pay the man and keep him at State. I have reason to believe that if Mullen can win here quick, and I mean like second in the SECW or actually win the SECW in his 1st three years, he will stay here because he knows he can win here, but we'd have to man up and pay him top dollar. Crooms was like a top 20 paid coach in college football. We're not poor as **** or anything. But, that said, I seriously doubt we get to the SECCG or finish second in the west in his first 3 years. That's what I think it takes for Mullen to stay here. He's got to win big and quick. I think he showed that it might be possible with how his team played in his first year. Yes my wool is ridiculously thick right now.

we couldnt match what they could pay- but whether his salary would be 3 million at State or 4 million at Georgia wont be the issue...it's the bigger recruiting bases, the 90K seat stadiums, and the tradition they have of competing for conference championships.

****, Jackie loved State but would have left us for Bama in a heartbeat had thet offered. Coaches want the hardware...and they want to be at schoold where getting that hardware is easier

that most coaches do like Tuberville did when he was at Ole Miss.

1. Take over middle tier SEC school and have some success. Dan has done that, and I believe he will continue that.

2. Once said coach has some success, talk to some schools such as LSU, Georgia, etc. BUT instead of taking their offer, fleece the crap out of your current employer. Tuberville did this in 1997 when it was rumored that he was a candidate for the Arkansas job.

3. Take your employers money, and after one year, then leave.

I hope Dan follows a similar path, should he choose to leave, and he will at some point.

I'm assuming Dan has a buy out clause in his contract- the money from that is hopefully enough that we could find and pay another high caliber coach and help offset any losses.

All coaches get to the point where they are past their prime, and Tuberville looked like he was past his the last couple of years at Auburn. He was once a very good coach, but I'm not sure he'll ever be that coach again.

Tuberville turned Arkansas down to stay at UM one more year. That's a hell of a lot different than turning down a Georgia or an LSU. If Auburn had gone after Tuberville a year earlier, he would have left Oxford in that pine box a year earlier.

Your coach isn't in danger of leaving, and he still won't be if he gets y'all 7 wins next year, which wouldn't surprise me. Even Vandy goes bowling sometimes.

If your coach is in danger of getting stolen by a better school just for taking you to a bowl game, then you're not an attractive enough program for a Mark Richt or a Tommy Tuberville. Speaking of which, would you really want a former Rebel at your helm?

As part of that hypothetical, he hovers at 7-8 wins a year for four or five years... beating Ole Miss in Starkville every other year and losing in Oxford every other year. No break out 10 win years, no horrible 4 win years. Just decently winning 2/3rds of the time.

Are you guys okay with that?

Some of this is about being realistic. Somebody else can do the actual calculations for you, but statistically speaking only about 40 of the 120 Div1A teams can be expected to be 7-5 in a given year. (It depends on the distribution of 6-6 teams.) The other thing that is pretty solid is that teams that have played football for more than 80 years seem to have reached a "rhythm. That is, we are pretty much a .540 team with an error of about .100 from year to year. You guys are pretty much a .500 with the same sort of error. Yes, it is possible for either of us to put together incredible anomalies like back to back 9 or 10 win seasons, but that requires the cooperation of .700 teams falling flat during a given year.

I keep trying to think where Mullen would head if he had marginal success at MSU. It would not likely be within the conference. Obviously it happens from time to time (Tubs to AUB and Nutt to OM), but without the NFL stops, do you think Saban and Spurrier would have left their gigs to move within conference? So, IF Mullen were to leave, where would he go? As much as it pains me to say this, MSU is not a terrible job. The major shortcomings have to do with it being in the middle of Bumfucktoolie, MS. USC is ten blocks from the ghetto, Penn State is in the middle of a rocky, cold *** valley, Alabama is in... well f@cking Alabama.

Finally, if Richt couldn't make Georgia run on all cylinders, what makes you think he would be able to make MSU work.

Get some perspective. Enjoy Mullen while he is there. Keeping telling yourself, Sly is gone, this isn't a dream.

As for whether I'd want a former Rebel at our helm, I wouldn't want Tuberville because I think he's past his prime, not because he used to coach at Mississippi. Any time we're hiring a new coach, I just want the best one we can get. If it happens that he used to coach at UM, that's not really a factor to me.

and to answer your question - I would be getting anxious but I think it would be like the Stansbury rule - you don't let go of a coach at Mississippi State who consistently wins 8 games/year.
