So the wife and I are thinking of taking a vacation and doing something in Louisiana, but not necessarily New Orleans. Not saying we're not going to New Orleans, but we've been there a few times now, and are trying to think of a few different things to try. Any suggestions of places we should go, tours we should take, etc. around the rest of the state?

where you can grab lunch or dinner in Abita Springs.

If you want to see some small town Cajun insanity, hit Fred's Lounge in Mamou on a Saturday. They open at 9 AM and so does the dancing and drinking. If you do head down to NOLA and haven't been to the Rock'n'Bowl give it a try.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think we are definitely going to St. Francisville now, and might hit Abita Springs, too.

Abita Brew Pup is over-rated food-wise, but is good place to have a few beers and appetizers. We went there last summer for lunch and it was 80+ degrees inside...we ended up driving over to Covington and eating at Copelands.

Dakota (Covington) is one the best restaurants in the south, but is pricey. Nuvalari (Old Mandeville) and Cafe Lynn (Mandeville) are both excellent and more reasonably priced. Along the lake front in Mandeville is a neat beer garden called Barley Oak, there's Rips which has more fried seafood, and there's the Lake House that's more of a burger joint. Also, The Broken Egg Cafe (in Old Mandeville) has some of the breakfast dishes you'll ever eat.

I wouldn't go just to hit the Brew Pub. All of my friends who have been say it's good, but not great. However, the Abita Brewery tour is well worth the trip. It's free, and you have an hour to try all of their beer.

Copeland's has really gone downhill in terms of quality lately. N'tini's is in Mandeville and is pretty good, too.
