I was too. Didn't make it clear, but my point was if your budget already puts you in a market where you might poach some high school coaches, it's not a terrible idea to consider what players a coach might bring with him.

Had Alford's high school coach been a position coach/recruiting coordinator (which is what I think he was basically hired for before their OC flaked out on them in the summer), hiring him shouldn't have been a problem.

They may have made some mistakes by promising Alford a bunch of stuff, such as guaranteed playing time, and maybe this particular instance they shouldn't have hired Alford's coach, but I don't think it's a bad idea in general for lower level teams to do that.

Well, off the top of my head ...

Kind of a "why not" situation.

This is not the first brush with the law for AA.

He is stlll suspended from school for the last incident & it's kinda hard to stay academically eligible 'if' you can't go to school.

He would have to sit out a year & for him that seems like a long time to stay out of trouble.

Alford's mother Lawanada Ann Alford also has a 'short fuze' RE: her arrest for disorderly conduct when someone booed AA during a game.

Blue Jays have already spent a draft choice and cash on AA; they probably get a 'vote' on what he does next.

I guess I fail to see the "big pickup". A guy who couldn't get it done on an 0-12 CUSA team is supposed to make an impact at an SEC school (with 1337473 qbs)?

Assuming this is all true and he is coming to Ole Miss, which hasn't even been mentioned as a possibility by anyone on any site except this one, why do you assume he will play QB? You don't think his athleticism could be used at RB, WR, CB, or S? There are a ton of guys who can't cut it at QB but do well at other positions.

Reading between the lines, I think Alford is using the threat of going to Ole Miss as leverage to make more money when the Blue Jays buy him out of playing college football. Makes little sense for Alford to pass up making it to the big leagues quicker in order to play a position that he has never played. Howeve, I wouldn't expect many of you to understand that since many of you think playing SEC football is the epitome of ones life. He will make more money by playing this game and Bus Cook is probably orchestrating it.

I read today that he hit something like .167. If I were the Blue Jays, I wouldn't give him **** until he got north of the Mendoza Line.

I think Alford's best bet might be to concentrate on baseball. If not, he should remain at USM, at least until the new hire is made.

You obviously know nothing about baseball. Teams tend to give a **** about players they offer over a million dollars to. Don't confuse talent level, with the production of an 18 year old in pro ball for the first time after just playing at Petal High. Zero comparison to competition. Alford was one of the top 10 most talented players in the draft last year but fell to the third round because no one wanted to risk their 1st round pick on a kid that may play football. You can bet your life savings that the Blue Jays give a big ****, and will buy him out of playing football in time. He is using this as leverage for that buy out because USM no longer provides much leverage.

i think you may be wrong. If anything, Alford is blowing his chances to play baseball. He may even owe the 750k they fronted him with no return on their money. The couple of weeks he spent with them last summer was a fail. He better make it in football as he has about 17ed the baseball away. Both him and his momma better get it together.
