This is especially true if he is a senior. If your 3 most talented interior lineman are Utter, Foster, and Farmer, there is a way to get all 3 of them on the field at the same time. Make one of them the center.
If the position coach only wants to play 5 guys for all the snaps, odd man (or men) out will have to go somewhere else if he (or they) wants to play football.
If Thurston wants to play football, I can understand him transferring.
Why? I would rather have Decker a FR. be the backup than Thurston.Man, I don't understand him transferring unless it truly is an academic deal where he wants a grad program not offered by NU. I was sure he would be our starting center next fall and him leaving puts us perilously thin at center.

He hasn't proven much during his time at NU. I'd rather see Utter/Decker get time at Center this fall.
I'd rather see a young guy like Decker gets reps or guy like Utter who wants to be here and has played just as much as Thurston (granted at a different spot.) It's not like Thurston was an All-Conference player. He was pretty good in both Bowl games..neither one,of the people you mentioned have proven anything at that position. He has.
The problem is that we don't have ANYBODY behind Decker. IMO, IF we really are pursuing a grad transfer center why the heck not try to re-recruit Thurston. IMO he's played some of the best center of anybody I've watched for several years now at NU. Some of that was due to some nagging injuries at that position last year but still....I'd rather see a young guy like Decker gets reps or guy like Utter who wants to be here and has played just as much as Thurston (granted at a different spot.) Really. Hadn't heard that one I guess. If Whitaker stays healthy look for Farmer to be our starting center.

Wow ! When we were getting the new coaches and some were receiving a lot of scrutiny; I looked and our o-line coach had averaged 2.5 players a year getting some type of Pac 10 conference honors - THIS is from Oregon State vs the likes of UCLA and USC etcetera. He can flat out coach; we have to love how these players are moved and tested, tells me there is a lot of " group coaching ", going on also - and I believe HCMR and others are helping him with the concept that not only d-linemen, need rotation. ..... With all the d-line transfers and activity added in; it seems there is a new culture of work and achievement , and many have left - I am a fan of Thurston and he knows he can play at a high level, so I thank him for outstanding play in tough circumstances; and wish him luck. Thats quite a plate; to change schools and try to unseat others in a new system. He's been getting lots of reps at center and will be working hard thru the summer to better learn the position.
You are correct; and I believe its probably very similar on the defensive line.We have
1a. utter
1b Decker
Then Farmer as a potential
Boe Wilson (#2 ranked Center in the country) coming in.
I fail to see the problem in letting a kid go who decided he wanted to go to class more than he wanted to play football.
