Spoke with Byrne while setting up....I asked him what he thought of Polk's comments today on the radio and he said "Who's Comments?", I repeated "Polk's"..he stared upward and looked back at me and said...."Not sure if I know him"...then he laughed and changed the subject

There were over 4000 people there. The place went pretty wild when Cohen was announced. The catfish wasn't any good. Only one gate entrance to get to the coliseum with both MSU and USM using the fairgrounds tonight. I laughed at the Suggestions? box hanging on the wall beside an exit door at the coliseum. I could fill that up pretty easily.

City wouldn't let us open more than one entrance because they said they would have to send Police Officers to help with the traffic...WTF?

In reference to DS request for info...Coach Croom said his goal was a BCS game...hmmm

Cohen turned down 6 mil, 10 years... Croom knew last year that we couldn't compete for a conference championship, but set it as a goal for his team anyway... His team's 4 goals from last year were (1) go to any bowl, (2) win the conference, (3) beat ole miss, and (4) beat alabama. This year's goals are the same, but substitute BCS bowl for "any" bowl. Stans seemed to indicate his 5 starters will be barry, jarvis, brian johnson, ravern, kodi augustus. I think he also indicated dee bost might redshirt? Anybody else catch that? Fanning signed three players who she's importing from the Congo this year. One is 6-5 and can "scratch her knees without bending over." She can also dunk sitting down. OK, i made that part up. I think every coach that spoke got a dig in at Polk. None of Cohen's assistants could be there because they were all out recruiting (which is very good news.) Greg Byrne wants you to pick up trash, and everybody to pull on a rope in the same direction somewhere. Croom and Cohen were childhood friends in Birmingham, but just figured it out (seriously.) Well, Cohen was a child. Croom wasn't. But it's not creepy like that. Tim Bailey may have to go back to Iraq after he graduates in December I think. Croom thinks our D is great- said this was the best we'd ever been at corner. Said the biggest loss was on the line with Brown and Hannibal, and that we won't have a DT who's a pass-rush threat, but said that our LB's are by far the best group he's ever had, and we'll pass rush a lot more with them. That's about all I can remember.

Croom did indicate he felt we could be in the conference race if we got great senior leadership (the seniors came down from Vegas, must have be 20 or so. great to finally have a large senior class); if we paid attention to details, if we got the breaks, if we didn't have injury problems and I'm sure I'm missing a few other ifs (like if we can score some points). He did say we'll always start with defense first. Coach Bryant used to say the other team can't win if they can't score. I think he was onto something.

Winsome Frazier is back at State taking classes this summer to finish his degree, and Cohen said that Ron Polk was the Bear Bryant of college baseball.

Skip Bertman is the Bear Bryant of college baseball. You could also make a great case for Ron Fraser and Rod Dedeaux, though.

I saw him walk at graduation in 05; not that it would be impossible to walk and find out later you didn't actually complete your courses.

...that not counting the guys he's run off or went pro early that when Winsome graduates, that 29 out of 35 basketball players will have graduated from MSU-- a figure second only to Vanderbilt in the SEC.

well damn, I was always proud for that guy for having graduated. Guess it's even better that he did come back to finish.

I am not sure I would publicly single out winning single games as goals. I know he wants to beat Alabama. But, I think that might should be a private goal. For one thing, everybody builds expectations about winning that game and can have those expectations dashed. Second, it gives the other team a little motivation ammunition. Why make them feel important?

I know. It's nit picky.

He wants to beat the two teams that the fans would most like to beat. I guess I just wouldn't tell everyone that. Don't talk about it. Do it.

Winsome has gotten a new car by now.

I never know the ins and outs of recruiting violations. However, I am pretty certain we did not buy that guy a car.

surely he meant "best i've ever had", like with the LB's, right? or did he watch us at all in 98 and 99?

But that's still pretty bold, most people think corner is a weakness of ours this year. And not many people would say that since losing AJ we're better than last year.
