I know one of the minority owners and have kind of wanted to ask him about it, but seeing as how he just lost his investment I'd feel kind of bad about bringing it up. Hated to see it go.

closing in a few weeks and re-opening in that closed restaurant building next to Jasons deli where the traffic light is in front of Best Buy. I think it was a Logans, a Roadhouse Grill or something like that at one time. I looked a couple of weeks ago and it wasn't there though. There was still a sign up last week outside the Pearl Holiday Inn so I guess that one is open or maybe didn't bother taking the sign down when the lights went out.

The one in Ridgeland closed in November/December, and the one in Hattiesburg closed too (not sure when). I doubt the Pearl one would be able to stay open if they had to close the other two. If it is open, you'd probably better go there soon if you want to because if it's not closed yet, it many be soon.

Iknow the bank forclosed on the whole building. So whatever that means. I liked the tv's in the both idea. They had 3 things workin against them though- parking, back of the building(it was kinda hidden), and rpd using it as a dui trap

....unless you are ready to be married to the place, and that still doesnt guarantee anything, you better stay away. I see people all the time thinking they will open up a restaurant and think they will get by working 30-40 hours week. Places shut down before you know it

I bet if you combined the people that were in there the 10-15 times I"ve been in there, it wouldn't fill up the place.

I've been the only table in there on the first friday of the ncaa tourney before.

For all of the jackson area's faults, not having a single decent sports bar is probably its greatest.

Alot of that is on the jackson area people... People in this town flock to chains like BW3, Red Lobster, Olive Garden, Chili's, etc... (I realize the last 3 are not sports bars but they stay packed). If you want nice local ORIGINAL places you have to support them...

Have you been out to Burger's and Blues? It's a lot of fun and a great sports bar. I've enjoyed it. The Al Stamps burgers aren't too bad either.

And the service there is atrocious.

I'll definitely patron Alumni House if they're moving into the old Macaroni Grill.

I don't think you can even consider it a sports bar. Hanging a couple of medium sized HD tvs does not make you a sports bar. You would also think with the economy the way it is, you could find some competent waiters, I know the two times I have been, my waiter seemed to have trouble figuring out where the kitchen was. To get another beer, it was much easier to walk to the bar and pay for one than it was to order one from the waiter. This had nothing to do with being busy since the place was pretty empty.

I am not a fan. I liked the Alumni House but hate that it is moving further away from where I live.

Ate there last Friday with friends. I wouldn't call it a sports bar though.

I also like Cherokee Inn & Irish Frog. I also wouldn't call them sports bars either.

Doesn't look they are moving anywhere. Get your kitchen equipment, tables, chairs and TV's.

He didn't lose as much of his investment as you think. The owners allwent out sticking people for money. They owe me over $8000 andall live in much bigger houses than I do. Bastards. If I see them, I assure you I won't feel bad for bringing it up.

They wanted about 25% more than you said they owe you for a 'share.' Thankfully, my better judgment stopped me from biting.

I heard they just got overextended and finally crashed and burned.

besides LA and any city in the state of Texas. It is Papitos. I was on my way to Bed, Bath, ....cough...Best Buy and we saw on the window it's going to be a Papitos.

Margaritas is not even a mile down the road and it's owned by the same people.

5 restaurants broken down as follows - 3 Papitos, 1 Margaritas, 1 La Cazuela.

Why in the blue hell do they use 3 different names?

Some sort of immigration issue?

How many other Mexican places are within a stone's throw from that location? Isn't there one in the old Garfield's now? And the one on Wheatley in front of Walmart.

there is a new Mexican place going in the old Keegan's building that has sat empty for quite sometime on Old Canton. So, in Madison-Ridgeland-NE Jackson, off the top of my head...and some of their names I am forgetting or never have known.

1. Place in old Garfields
2.Place in old Macaroni Grill
3.Margaritas
4.Cozumels
5. Place in old Keegans
6. Place next to Krystal by Kroger at corner of Old Canton and County Line
7. Place in Ridgeland in strip center intersection of HWY 51 and Jackson Street.
8. Place next door to Buffalo Wild Wings
9. El Ranchito in Madison
10. El Portrillo Madison
11. Papitos Madison
Forgetting any??!!

Also, as for the whole Alumni House thing, they started off average and just got worse. The service got so terrible that when we would go there for lunch sometimes since it's right up the street from my office, we would always sit at the bar in order to get service. Then the food got nasty. Last time I ate there, we ordered nachos. They took a cold hamburger patty and crumbled it up in chunks and tried to pass it off as ground beef topping on the nachos! I thought I was gonna puke. I was told by someone that would know that they went through like 17 various kinds of managers. There were too many people involved in the ownership and too many opinions and decision makers among a bunch of other issues.

I never ate there, so it could have been closed for a few years, I don't know.

I think there's also Barrio Antiguo on Old Canton close to Amerigo- sounds Mexican. I'm impressed with your list though.

And for the record, Cuco's was better than all of these (at least in it's prime).

Anybody that has eaten Mexican in, say Dallas, knows what I'm talking about. The very best Mexican around here is merely average.

I know a guy who knows Fernando. Fernando has tried to open real Mexican restaurants before and they've failed simply because the population here has been trained to like bad Mexican food. Incredible.

When I was over there for a two-week trip (courtesy of the National Guard), I actually went to a Mexican Restaurant. It was run by an expatriate American, and it was better than the Mexican restaurants around here.

I know one of the part owners in the Hattiesburg location and I know that they had a HUGE rent on that building. I was asked to buy a "share" but didn't see how they could survive with such a large rent, plus I didn't think the foot was that good. Glad I didn't really even consider it. <div>
</div><div>As far as Mexican goes, my favorite in the Jackson area is El Dorado in Byram. It's much better than most of the crap Mexican in the Jackson area, however I still don't consider it that great. There is a place in Crystal Springs that's a little bit better, but I can never remember the name of it, just know how to get there and that it's across the street from one of the grocery stores in a small strip mall.</div>

...then why are you so sure it's worse?

i think it's that "Mexican" has become to a lot of people something that they're used to. It's like a McDonald's or other chain, they don't go for the quality, they go for the consistancy.

But I've had Mexican in Cali and Texas, and the only difference i've noticed is a greater availability of hot sauces/salsas. Hell, California seems like nothing but an endless chain of "fresh salsa cantina"s.

Location, Location, Location.....

They were in a bad spot, a bar is not going to make it with the Ridgeland and Madison Police nearby. You have to be in Jackson, where the Police are too busy to make giving a DUI their top priority. There was also no major sign on 51 and parking was a *****. The food was also sub-par, nothing special. They were only busy from Sept - Jan for football, it was a football bar, not a Sports Bar.... They TV's were not in-sync either, the small one on your table was way ahead of the big screens, that really was a BIG Negative for me.... I heard they could not pay their vendors on time and the lack of cash flow finally caught up with them...
