Anyone else feel like the atmosphere at the Hump has been killed?

TheKentuckygame in 04 was the most wild crowd I have ever seen at the hump. I wasn't a student in 96, but I was in Starkville. I am sure the atmospheres outside the games were pretty similar.<div>

Ive talked to the Athletic Dept. about this recently and made the same points you guys have.

1. The mic man sucks! We can't understand him and he's trying to hard to get a laugh out of the crowd.

2. The Cadence Bank contest sucks as well. Surely they can come up with something better than that.

3. The student section has died mostly because the normal students don't want to be associated with the five weirdos on the front row. I think they should get the frat boys and sorority chicks to require pledges to participate. I was not in a frat, but I guarantee this would get more people involved.

4. Bring back Flick. I miss things like "super D, Daryl Wilson"

5. Just win baby win!

your point definitely has merit. I don't think there's a sport in the country that is as heavily influenced by home field/court advantages than college basketball. Basketball is an energy sport and if there's not much atmosphere, you may as well be playing on a neutral court. Again, I think there are many other things that led to early home losses the last few years, but small crowds certainly don't help.

to a vocal minority is gone. The same guy that crapped on several decent people for no real reason. The guy that hired a coach that can't win at Michigan. You know, the guy who was once, and still is, idolized by so many.

But to answer your question, ol Hank has his pride and his ego. So I don't know.

This is one of the few decisions he made that I think he got wrong. Football is fine the way it is, I don't think Hank added as much to the football games as he did to the basketball game, but he shouldn't have burnt that bridge with Hank the way he did. Maybe just replacing him for football would have worked better.

These are from the early 90's when I was in school. In each case in the standard Hank Flick nasal tone:

1. National anthem intro went something like this: "For all we have, for all we are, for this great university and for this community we call home, with your right hand placed over your heart, please sing out loudly and proudly the words as our Pep Band leads us (pause) in our national anthem."

2. Post-game sign-off line after giving final score, stats, etc.: "We remind our great fans to drive safely and defensively and without benefit of alcohol. And, as always, have a good, good evening."

3. "At quarterback guard, a 5-11 senior hailing from College Park, Georgia, number 20, the Mighty Dog, Chuckie-Chuckie Evans!"

4. "A good, good evening and welcome to the Humphrey Coliseum here on the campus of Mississippi State University . . . for an evening of baaaaaaaaaaassssketball . . .Mississippi State style! For tonight's contest between the visitingTigers of theLouisiana State University[pause here for boos] and our SEC West-leading Bulldogs from Mississippi State University! And now the starting line-ups, first for our visitors fromBaton Rouge. . .

[intro for visiting team in dull, dry monotone until he gets to a player who went to high school in Mississippi but signed with the out-of-state school: "As always, please give a warm welcome home to [Vernell Singleton, James Robinson, Jesse Pate, etc.]

Then,

"Eeeeeverybody up on your feet to welcome home our SEC-leading Mississippi StateUniversity Bulldogs!"

"At forward, a 6-6 senior from Forest, number 23, Silky Smooth Greg Carter!"

"Also at forward, a 6-7 senior from Flora, number 21 Caaaaaameron Buuuuurrrns!"

"At center, a 6-9 senior from Albany, Georgia, number 33 Downtown Toooood Merritt!"

"At quarterback guard, a 6-2 senior from Utica, number 20 Doug Hartssssssfield!"

"And at guard, a 6-2 junior from Rolling Fork, number 22Top GunTony Watts!"

"Simply the best, head coach of our Bulldogs, is Richard Williams.CoachWilliams is assisted by Mike Mathis, Rick Stansbury and Ricky Stone. Game captains, for the visitors,33 O'Neal, and for ourBulldogs 20Hartsfield and 23 Carter. Tonightsgame officials: John Clougherty and Gerald Boudreaux."

Pretty sure we tried "just replacing him for football", and Hank took all his toys and went home.

My recollection is that Hank would use the "Smoke" reference when Cam scored (usually by throwing down a tremendous dunk in someone's face) but not in the pre-game intro. Of course, I've been wrong at least once this year and could be wrong again here.

Cars were flipped, impromptu car parades were rolling through campus, tress were rolled, I even saw a truck pulling a huge boat with kegs and coeds in the back. It was crazy.

I wasn't there in 04, but we've had some great crowds and wild atmosphere at Basketball games. It's sad to hear that that is gone. But if we start playing to our potential I bet it'll get crazy again.

For the most part, State football is an exception bc of the event it has become with the Junction, Dawg Walk, tailgaiting, etc, arenas and stadiums are going to be filled and loud and rowdy when we are good and kind of lousy when we are bad. 96 was great, I was just a kid, but it was great, but 2 short years later with Horatio Webster and that crew, the Hump was a pretty lonely place. The place was rocking in the early '00's when we had good teams, but, and maybe this is bc I was a student at the time, I'll never forget the UK game 2 years ago.

There were a few people that camped overnight, but at 1 pm, 7 hours before the game, and 5 hours before they would let the students in, the line was wrapped all the way down the hill spilling out onto Collegeview St. I waited for 5 hours in the cold, and still had to sit in the upper deck. It was as wild and rowdy as any sporting event I've been to. Most everybody that was in line that long was tanked by the time the game started, which is prolly one of the reasons why the bottle throwing took place. Even with our mediocre season(at the time) and the split student sections, when you get a big name team in the Hump, the place is gonna be good. That's not gonna change.

by mispronouncing names like "Tobias Smith". If giving them both back to Hank is what it takes to get him back for basketball, I'd be all for it.

It would not be out of the question for Dr. Flick to do that. It happened before at a much-less publicized event. Would he come back? I don't know.

I do know he is a great professor; few were as entertaining as him. Loved having him as an adviser as well.
