Mods, if this isn't allowed, please delete. Alright Sixpack, I need some recommendations. Sadly I got laid off a while ago and have been trying to find suitable employment since with little to no luck. Things are tight right now and I understand that but I have a duty as a father and a husband to provide for my family. If anyone has any recommendations or pointers, I'll be glad to listen. My degree is in Business and have spent the past 6 years in purchasing for an offshore concrete barge construction company. Prior to that, it was plant management in a concrete manufacturing facility. I live in south Mississippi and would be willing to travel from Gulfport to New Orleans and as far north as Hattiesburg. I'm not able to relocate at this time due to wife's contract and father battling cancer with no other help. If anyone knows of anything, please let me know. I welcome all responses serious and not. Good day gentlemen. Go Dawgs.

2 year nursing degree. Same thing happened to me. Laid off. State of MS paid my nursing school $$ through a program to retrain workers who had been laid off. Never thought it was something I would EVER do. You an ALWAYS find a nursing job. It may not be the exact job you want at the time, but you won't go unemployed. There are tons of directions you can go with it once you have fairly minimal experience.

Good luck to you. I started over at 40.

I'm at 39 so I know what you mean. I've done a few interviews here and there but nothing serious has come of it. I've thought about nursing but I need employment sooner rather than later. I would only be able to do nursing school at night. Thanks for sharing.

May not be what you want to hear, but if things get tight enough, you just need to get A job. Then you can go from there. I know someone who worked for a company that shut down a while back. He had over 30 years of accounting experience and 20+ years of that in senior management. Also had a side business that went south around same time (both were in med field and lost patients due to Katrina and medicare/medicaid cuts). Ended up pulling luggage off air planes for $10/hour until something better finally came along. It sucked for a while, but it paid his bills.

i would post on facebook and ask your wife to do the same. i found myself in a bad situation needing a job about two years ago. got the wife to ask around in her network on facebook and got two hits immediately. one of them worked out and i have lucked into a good job in a new company. i was lucky, but it looked dire for a while. the people she knew, knew me indirectly and cared about her/us enough to pass on a tip. hope everything works out.

I just traded with a plumber on a remodel for $150 per hour and a HVAc guy for $550 for labor to move an AC unit out of the way for construction and put it back after construction, no parts and about two hours time. I was glad to pay it because nobody wanted to mess with my little job. I may have to pour my own concrete because nobody will even give me a price on less than 5 yards. My son went to community college and got a commercial electricians degree before engineering school at State. He bounced around for several years between jobs after State but he always could walk right into a electrician job between engineering gigs. He will tell anybody that that two year degree was one of the best things he ever did. It may not be practical in your situation but these guys are getting hard to find.

This. My wife has a BSN and she backs over job offers leaving the garage. I thought an accounting degree was in demand. She gets stuff in the mail for travel nursing that's pays handsomely while paying per diem and housing.

I can understand what you are going throught because it has happened to me before. Like someone else said you may have to get a job short term while looking for the right job. Just never give up because it is easy to do. I was looking for years before I got back on track. Just keep your head up man.

Try a Credit Union or Bank. Preferably a CU. The pay isn't top notch but typically the benefits are great. The one I work at starts with 4 weeks PTO, 7% 401k match, federal holidays paid, quarterly bonuses, health club reimbursement, etc. With your background you'd seem to be a candidate for a Branch Manager position, and they range from 55k to 70k not counting bonuses and incentive pay.

I was going to suggest this. Even if you gotta work a teller line for a while, they'll give a shot at lending pretty quickly.

If you're desperate you could probably find a job in operations with a trucking company. Pay starting out may not be what you're looking for but most companies will bump you up pretty fast. Warning. If you get in you may never get out.

Now. If you have contacts at warehouses, plants, manufacturers etc that will guarantee you freight I can put you in touch with a couple broker agencies. If you both like what each other have to offer you can broker under their bond and work from the house.

I was laid off the week before the 2011 Gator Bowl. Just bought the wife a car and spent a bunch of money on flight, hotel, and tickets to the game. I was sick. Didn't have kids so I didn't have that additional stress you're dealing with. Found another job within a month. Turned out to be crooks. They stopped paying me and one of them stole my credit card. Started my own trucking company in July of 2011 It's had its ups and downs but it's worked out. Small plug. Sorry DS. I need van and flatbed freight in N MS. This year has been more bad than good.

LinkedIn is always a good option to search for jobs. Also, check out one of the Mississippi State alumni chapters around you and contact the heads of them. They typically have a great pipeline of people that they know that could help out and could even send out feelers since they have email addresses of fellow dawgs in the area.

Piggybacking on the LinkedIn sector, login in to LinkedIn, then search Mississippi State followed by some towns around you. So for instance "Mississippi State Gulfport". It will bring up people that have graduated from State that work around you. Connect and reach out to them. You never know who you might can connect with that's looking to hire someone.

That's actually what I'm about to do. I have a good job right now, but I'm away from home a lot and plan on having kids soon and I don't want to miss out on it. So I'm going back to school this summer and getting another degree in something I've always wanted to do. So while I'm doing that I've lined up a job with a bank. While the pay isn't great, really not even that good, it will be some type of income while I'm able to go to school and eventually be able to do something I will enjoy and be able to be at home.

I don't know how well you are at taking tests... However, you could look at getting professional licenses for minimal investments ... Insurance (sales and adjusting) real estate, securities, I know that involves sales but those are designations that can never be taken away from you if you keep your education up.

I looked at Ingalls career site and they are looking for a purchasing analyst.
I will look into it. Thanks. I will check out the other suggestions as well. I'm not having any luck so far with Indeed or LinkedIn but I'll keep trying. I would really like to get on with one of the companies at Stennis. Always wanted to work there.

Here's a Contract Specialist position listing with an opening at Keesler AFB: https://www.usajobs.gov/GetJob/ViewDetails/428443200/

I was looking at that one yesterday. I was in the middle of applying for another one today and was going to apply to that one next when my laptop completely shut down on me this morning with the bad weather. I'll try again though. Biloxi is a bit of a drive from Picayune but I can't be picky.
