I know we have a long time until baseball season, but you have to be motivated after reading that write up.

and will likely be a weekend starter at some point this year. also, i heard that the pitching looks like a completely different team. maybe because it is a mostly different staff.

we had a couple of walk-ons- Jordan Faulkner-from MADISON Central and Meridian CC and Trent Hartzog from Lawrence Co., I believe and Co-Lin that were topping out at 90 MPH. I thought that was pretty impressive.

Our weekend staff is looking something like this:

Nick Routt- Fri. or Sat.

Devin Jones- Sat. or Fri.

Whitney- Sun. Midweek.

CC Watson- Midweek, Sun.

I think the issue is going to be this- Whitney has experience, and has had some success as an SEC starter, and is a senior. Watson has really good stuff, but is a true Fr. The dilemma is do you go with the guy with great stuff and little experience? Or do you go with the veteran who is more of a contact oriented pitcher?

Personally, I would go with Watson on Sun. because he is going to be facing better hitters on the weekend, and when you have good stuff, you have more margin for error to make mistakes. He also would be facing the third guy on the other SEC staffs, so I think he would be OK match up wise.

With Whitney, you throw him midweek knowing that he will be facing lineups with only 1-2 true power guys and a lot fo contact guys. He also has enough experience that he would not be intimidated facing a good midweek team like Ole Miss in the Gov Cup or USM.

yesterday and CC had a really rough day. Even some of the outs were line shots. I have no doubt that he'll be good but wasn't on yesterday.

I thought Trey Johnson pitched really well and wasn't expecting to see that. He also looked good at the plate.

Ogden looked better than Maniscalco defensively. He reminded me of Dozier at USM. He really must not be able to hit since he didn't really have many offers. The one time I saw him hit it wasn't impressive but that's also not fair to judge off one at bat.

Ryan Collins looks stronger and really smashed the ball against a LHP.

Cohen loves Trey Johnson. I have to believe that he is going to be a big part of our team next year. With Dixon going down, you have to think that he has a chance to be the closer as well.

Ogden only hit something like .250 or so last year in JUCO ball. But, he was obviously brought in for his glove. One thing that went unnoticed for much of the year was the lack of range on our defense, which didn't help our pitching staff, which needed all of the help it could get. I certainly believe that Ogden will see a good bit of playing time, but I also have to think that Nick Vickerson and Jet will see a lot of playing time in the middle infield because of their offense. I have heard a lot of things about Vickerson, but the thing with him is his defense, but his problems sound very correctable. And then there is Rawdow.

Ryan Collins issue has always been health since he hurt is shoulder his Fr. year. He got a late start last year, struggled, but started to hit much better as the season went along. If he's healthy, and I think he is, he will be a very good player for MSU- on offense and defense.

The most disappointing player to me thus far has to be Jaron Shepherd. This is a guy who has been drafted a couple of times, and it sounds like he is going to get beat out by Brent Brownlee. Actually, I should redact what I just said and say that Ethan Bright is the most disappointing despite the fact I really wasn't expecting him to contribute all that much this year. Shepherd still has to be mentioned, though.

I think third base is going to be an interesting battle in the spring when Sneed comes back. I don't think it's totally out of the question that Cohen may decide to go with a better defensive option there, and make Sneed a DH.

I do like what I see out of this team so far. Closer is the biggest concern to me right now, but I really like the depth that we are amassing. I do wonder how the Fr. pitchers are going to respond. I do feel pretty good about the future of our pitching- especially Watson, Stratton- who appears to be healthy, Bole, and Bracewell. Thing about scrimmages though- every time someone does something well, it also means that someone else on your team did something not so well.
