Good gravy...it is a little smokey...so is every stadium on game day because of tailgates and flyovers. They will be fine.

That smoke is dispersed much quicker than the smoke of forest fires. The scale is on a completely different level here. Just the other morning the sky here in Omaha was yellow due to the smoke created from the fires over there, I don't know of any venue creating smoke like that.

I don't see how you can say that. If it is unsafe, it would be irresponsible to play. People aren't even supposed to go outside right now. The Oregon team has moved their practices.

Football isnt safe but parents put their little kids out there and games are played 3 days a week for a third of the year.

I'm glad you could take time off from the Hawkeye board to post here. I've seen your discussions there and I'm not gonna put these Husker fans through your painful anecdotes.

With that said, I was clearly joking.

Were you also joking when you said Oregon would put up at least 40 on us on Saturday too?

The fact is, if any of you dopes on that board knew an ounce about football, you would realize by our alignments on defense alone that Diaco played it as conservatively as you can against Arkansas State. Take a look at video of Green Bay, Baltimore, or Pittsburgh's defense and contrast them to what you saw Nebraska doing last Saturday. That will clue you in pretty quickly as to what we were doing. When you see 4 and 5 on the LOS this week, you'll realize just how conservatively Diaco was playing it.

In most cases, we only sent 3 linemen, and even then, they were told to stay in their lanes and not lose containment on the QB. We had only 5 in the box nearly the entire day. When we actually sent 4, we usually got pressure on their QB. It just didn't happen very often.

Something else you should consider...Arkansas State has a number of 3-Star and above players on both their offense and defense. 4 of their top 6 WRs were 3-Star players. Their starting RB was a 3-Star player. They had a handful of 3-Star OLinemen. And their QB was a 5.9 4-Star Oklahoma transfer.

On defense, DE Rolland Jones is on the Nagurski and Bednarik Watch Lists, and their other DE is a 4-Star Alabama transfer. Again, many 3-Star and above players on their defense, which ranked 19th in scoring D last year. So scoring 43 on them wasn't too bad at all. Our offense essentially had their way with their defense.

They won 8 games last year, pounded Central Florida in their bowl game, and have won the Sun Belt Championship 5 of the last 6 years. Better than most cupcakes that are scheduled early in the year.

It appears that their recruiting classes are usually comprised of transfers from better programs and Kansas JUCOs and usually about half of their class are 3-Star or better. Sure, they don't have the recruiting classes that Nebraska has, but they had some decent talent on the field at various positions. Mostly at WR and QB. And with them going with a 3-step drop much of the time, it's difficult to generate much of a pass rush to begin with. It further supports what Diaco was doing.

I hope you are right - UCONN fans say bend don't break is Iaco's style and that he plays base pretty much all the time regardless of match-ups. So this is like a Pelini D with a focus on not giving up big plays - only in 3-4 and no blitzing.......sounds like Oregon will hold a track meet at our expense to me.

What happens if this is how it plays out? Diaco experiment ends? Give another coach DC duties? I can't believe HCMR would sit by and let it happen.

I think the fan base is in a situation where they keep throwing out items where the cure is worse than the ailment.

Don't lose your gourds.

If Mike Riley cans Diaco after Game 2, you may as well post "just have Mike Riley resign".

Even though it wasn't a great defensive performance, particularly first half, we finished what, 97 total yards on defense behind Oregon?

I do believe that is a strong indicator that we should kick the staff to the curb, throw out our shot at Parsons, and let the rest of the class blow up after Bookie bolts and just start this thing over. /snark

You're just yanking chains, right? Surely you don't really believe this would be a viable solution, right?

I'm certain he wouldn't be fired. He'd get a bye vs. Oregon but if the trend continued?

For how long? I think Diaco is tied to Riley now. They both either sink or swim. Riley won't survive if he has to fire another D coordinator.

Agreed. Diaco is not getting fired Year 1. Diaco's not a bad coordinator, Riley will try and keep things floating until he can get OLB help or until the whole staff is let go.

People thought AD SE was going to walk in here and have Pelini's scalp inside 5 mins. Didn't work that way. Learn a Lesson.

Interesting to think about....

What if parsons commits here? The disillusioned part of the NU fan base probably has a Jimmy chitwood on Hoosiers moment with regards to the D.C.

I don't think the staff is expecting to be in a lifeboat at the end of the year so they probably don't give a whole heck of a lot of thought whether Riley is going to get fired at the end of the year with diaco calling his system or say DW calling the same plays

If we trot out a 3-man front against Oregon's offense on Saturday, and play it for most of the day, we'll lose by 40...and I'll purchase the tar and feathers. Until then, I'm not going to flip out thinking about things that likely won't happen.
