Anyone watching Kentucky implode in this 3000 person gym?

Due to Rupp Arena being used for the big tourney they have to play at Robert Morris, an 8 seed in the NIT. And these guys are taking it to them. Obviously UK is flat lining though. Can you say court rushing?

We did that too a few years ago when we were left out of the NCAA and were a 1 seed in the NIT if I recall correctly. Seems like we lost to Idaho or Montana or some NW school.

Hmmm don't remember that one.

Why would we have traveled then though? Obviously the Hump wasn't being used for the big tourney.

That year, we won our first round game against JSU and lost to North Carolina in the second round.

that game was played at the hump, not sure if this guy is just misremembering or completely fabricating memories.

Yeah, obviously I didn't remember it correctly either

I know we were a 1 seed a few years ago, but I also remember us losing the first game to some western team, basically because we didn't want to be there. But we wouldn't have been a 1 seed then or it would have been a Hump game.

At any rate, I think that's UK's problem tonight ... they don't want to be there and probably find it embarrassing. Not sure why since they lost all their starters last year to the NBA.

I'm beginning to think it's the latter

but it's easily look-upable. I'll try to find out.

Teams like Kentucky or us last year should just decline the NIT.

They took up a spot that could have gone to a team that wanted to be there.

North Carolina played in a different gym the week before. Maybe that's what he's thinking of.

Ironically, UNC was defending national champs that year, too. Should have beaten them.

You are thinking of the Titty Dawgs. Back when we had Thomas, White and Fambrough (three first round picks, and two overall No. 1s on the same team, and still couldnt make the Sweet 16), we were a 3 seed that had to go to 6 seed Oregon. The reason - some SEC alumni delegates conference was scheduled for the Hump and they couldn't move it (Hunter Henry wasn't built yet).

So we go out to Oregon, who had a crazy two year home winning streak. We were pissed about the draw, but took care of the 14 seed. Then a crazy thing happened. 11th seeded UAB, who barely got in the tournament, upset Oregon. Then they proceeded to beat us in front of 50 people to get to the Sweet 16.

Arguably the worst coaching job in MSU history was the three year span that Thomas and White were playing together. In those three years, we had a 3 seed that lost in the second round to a 14 seed. A 5 seed that was upset by a 12 seed, and an NIT team that lost the second game in the Hump.

They were back to back #1 overall picks in the WNBA draft.

I remember that game. Very competitive match. I believe that game was for a spot in New York.

No, looked it up. It was 1999 and we lost the first round game to Colorado State. Obviously, we were not a 1 seed. I also seem to remember some speculation about the altitude getting to us? I don't think so ... it was because we didn't want to be there and wanted to get out of town as fast as possible. Thought we should have been in the NCAAs.

Way to represent, big blew.

They couldn't use Rupp because of the real tournament. They couldn't use the old gym on campus because they didn't have enough time to get a full staff together, so they ended up at a respectable high school gym. Tomorrow will be a great day to live in Kentucky. Every crotchety, arms-folded UK fan at that game was thinking the same thing: "I can't believe I called in sick at the mine today for this." Time to re-shuffle the deck of freshen and see what happens.

Apparently there are 2 Robert Morris Universities

One is in Illinois and the other in Pennsylvania. Anybody know which one was playing UK tonight?

I assume the one in Pennsylvania

since Robert Morris were regular season champs of the Northeast Conference.

It was a competitive game, but that game also sealed the deal for stansbury for me. He was a preschooler trying to do calculus in terms of coaching in the second half.

Also, there was another game we had to win to get to NY. Forgot who it was against.

Got to give Calipari some credit for playing this game at all. His AD told him a couple of weeks ago that if they didn't finish strong they wouldn't be able to host an NIT game and asked if he wanted to decline a bid. He told him that they're no better any anyone else and if that's what they deserve they're absolutely going to play and see how they do. And the SEC takes another black eye in basketball this year. I think both UM's lose in the 1st round and UF loses in the 2nd in the real tournament.

Dude Cal is not really a bad guy at all. He's gotten a bad rep, but I've been very impressed with everything I've seen of him, at least at Kentucky. Not to mention his ability to command the respect of the primadonnas that sign with him.

His recruiting is dirty as hell. But you're right about his ability to mange the talent he recruits. Very few coaches could do anywhere near as good as he's done with that. It caught up to him this year though.

She was by far the best player that year but the #1 pick was a really tall white girl from Minnesota or someplace cold like that.

I believe the women's game was in New Mexico, and my recollection of the reason we couldn't host was because of the confederate flag in the state flag. Probably 2000-2002 time frame?

Think that his rep ...

Dude Cal is not really a bad guy at all. He's gotten a bad rep

Comes from being the ONLY HC in NCAA history to have to vacate two final four appearances ... '96 Marcus Camby paid $28K by an agent and '08 Memphis when NCAA found out that Derrick Rose didn't take his SAT.

I would contend that Rick Ray would do as good a job as Cal IF he got an average of FOUR MacDonald's AA each class. Yea, they play well together under Cal; they know that they are on a one or two year audition for the NBA.

Cal has too many 5* and one 4* players signed for next year that at least one and probably two 4*/5*s will have to transfer or be cut. Tough gig.

Some people say Cal buys players. That's not fair."Buying" implies some sense of long-term ownership. These guys are around for 9 months before moving on. That's really more of a rental agreement.

And I don't care what they said after a tough loss, there's no way ALL of UK's freshmen (who some fans now refer to as "The Uncoachables") stick around for another season.
