Well, we are better than Ole Miss, and it begs the question of why Georgia isn't better at football.

My theory on why Tennessee isn't very good anymore is that at one time most SEC games were not televised, but every one of Tennessee's were televised. Due to this, Tennessee had the ability to go into many different parts of the country, including Mississippi, Louisiana, North Carolina, and South Carolina, and get players. They had a very big sex appeal because of the 100,000 seat stadium and the chance for their players to get more exposure. However, in the early 2000s, when the SEC started signing big-time TV contracts and most every SEC game was on TV, Tennessee lost their "exposure" advantage. Because these contracts, kids from the mentioned states no longer felt that they had to go far from home in order to get exposure and a good shot at getting to the NFL, and all else being equal most kids would rather stay close to home than moving off. This dearly cost Tennessee because East Tennessee doesn't produce many football players. Thus, in order for Tennessee to be successful they have to recruit nationally and outside their borders, but due to the current landscape of college football and TV contracts this is no longer as easy as it once was.

This why Tennessee will always have to be on the cutting edge from a facilities standpoint. They must convince kids to move away from home in order to be any good. Unlike South Louisiana, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, and Mississippi, East Tennessee just doesn't support enough quality players in order to support a Top 10 football program.

As far as Georgia goes, I have no clue why they are not better.

..considering the talent they have had on campus, UGA & Tennessee have been huge underachievers?

That's what stands out to me.

I don't think Tennessee underachieved if you look at how much their recruiting has fallen off since 2003. They were really good in the 90s when they were getting the talent, but they just are not getting it like they used to.

..in the alloted timespan of the graph, Alabama has had around 25 fewer NFL draftees than UT.

Yet Bama has won how many NC's in that time span? I've lost count.

UT, meanwhile, won a NC in 1998, & that's it.

The bottom line: UT has, over the years, had a whole crapload of NFL talent on campus, but has woefully underachieved with it.

Huh? What are you talking about? First of all 101-85= 16 not 25, and second of all Alabama was largely irrelevant from 1993 till when Saben got there. They have won NCs in 2009 and 2011. Those were the first ones they had won since 1992. In past few years Alabama has far and away out produced Tennessee. Tennessee has had some talent, but they got much much more of it a decade ago then they do now. <div>
</div><div>Is it really so hard to count Alabama's championships when they only have one more than Tennessee in the chart's time frame?</div>

more. He stunk as a coach, but he had to recruit a class under the rumor of the death penalty and he didnt do much from there.

I'd say Georgia and UT ending up where they are today, with the amount of draft picks they have tells a story. And Florida's success is just a weak excuse. Georgia and UT recruit against NOBODY in their respective states. In fact, they have North Carolina and kentucky and their states to cherry pick from. Yet they've not produced the success with those advantages.

Well let me help you out then. The number after 1 is 2. Bama has won 2 national championships in that time span. <div>
</div><div>ETA: If you want to count the 1992 season, then 3 is the number after 2, in case that was the point you got lost.</div>

Mullen won 9 games with mostly Croom players. Same players Croom could not beat anyone with.Croom would not have won 9 games that year. When JWS took over he went to a bowl game his first year with nothing but Rocky players. How many winning seasons did Rocky have? Florida and Georgia both have had top 10 recruiting classes the past 8 years and they both are average. It all goes back to coaching. I think this is why Mullen is rating in the top five of coaches in the SEC. He has done a lot at Miss State and I could be wrong but if he was the head coach with this coaching staff at Georgia he would be competing for the NC. I do think coaches can become out dated if they don't keep up with whats new. That's what happen to Fulmer. He just became out dated and Dooley is just not that good. That's why Tenn is just average. I am glad Tenn is average with us playing them next year and I hope they stay that way for at lest two years.

They've only won 98 games in the last 10 years with 5 top-10 and 3 other top-25 finishes.

They have no excuse not being in the top 10 every year. The only way they aren't in the top 10 is if the coach isn't a great recruiter or is a dumb coach.

There is simply too much talent in Georgia for that program to just be a top 25 program. GA's in state talent is only rivaled by that of Texas and Florida. Problem is that AU, FL and AL cherry pick the state. LSU doesn't let that happen very often. Richt has let it happen almost every year.

Trust me, after they lost to SC at home last year, there weren't three UGA fans on the planet that wanted Richt as their coach. Luckily for Richt he got to play a pillow soft schedule and win the East. They got curb stomped by LSU and then lost to an average Big 10 team.

Hell next year he is even luckier. He doesn't play AL, LSU or Arkansas. So I would expect another top 20 season. Hell looking at their schedule Im not sure what game they should lose even though they will.

uga has averaged right at 10 Ws per season under richt. they got unlucky and didn't make the BCS CG with a 12-1 record a season or 2, whereas bama, florida, and lsu (including a 2 loss season) picked the right seasons to lose a game and still make it. if uga picked a different season or 2 to go 12-1 no one would consider them underachievers.

think about this, in the last 20 years, auburn has 3 undefeated seasons and only 1 national title, while florida has no undefeated seasons and 3 national titles.

UGA - 5 top-10 seasons, 3 other top-25 seasons
LSU - 6 & 2
Bama - 5 & 1
Florida - 3 & 5

I'd say Georgia's holding their own compared to those schools. They haven't won a national title like those 3 have, but they've been pretty damn good, and more consistently goodthan any of the others, except LSU.

i think tennessee will be fine long term, they just have hit a rough patch in coaching. they are basically in the bama phase between stallings and saban.

also worth noting, the sec is going to have a lot of turnover in the next 5-10 years i think. spurrier is obviously close to retirement. saban is 60 (though i could see him coaching till he dies) so he's not young. lesticles is always a couple of brainfarts from being back on the hot seat. richt is always rumored to be ready to open his church camp in honduras or whatever. petrino already screwed up his arkansas gig, and i have a hard time they'll be able to land someone whose gonna be as successful as he was. we all wonder if chiz can win big without malzahn and $cam. muschamp is unproven.

i think the sec is the dominant conference right now because of the superior coaching. there's no guarantees these programs make slam dunk hires, even if they have the most money to throw at coaches. just look at bama between stallings and saban, or really most of the big sec programs in the late 90s other than tennessee and florida. or tenneessee right now. when this turnover happens in the next 5-10 years it'll be very interesting to see what happens.

Miles won his national title with 2 losses. With the current BCS, good fortune plays a huge factor. Georgia didn't have it in 02. Miles did in 07 and Saban did in 11.

But no doubt they've trended down the last couple of years.

they won 8 games in '09 and 6 games in '10, then last year right back to 10 Ws. barring a collapse, they should win 10+ games next year. i would say they had a hiccup for 2 years, but what i wouldn't give for our hiccups to only last 2 years and still be 6 and 8 W seasons. i mean, if uga is trending down, then so if florida.</p>

Georgia won 10 games last year b/c they didn't play LSU, Bama, or Ark. I dont think there is anyone that doesn't sense a downward trend in Athens. However, they have recruited well enough to reverse it.

eh, a lot of tredning is going to have to do with who you luck into scheduling in the conference.

i also tend to consider trending to be more than a 2 year hiccup. trending is like notre dame, or even tennessee. those are much more trending than just 1-2 off seasons.

is at a new place. They aren't what they were and likely never will be.

Trending means you begin to head in a certain direction. It doesn't mean you are there for good. It doesn't mean it cannot be turned around. That's why the term "trend" is used.

guess we just have different takes on "trending". given the natural fluctuation in one season to the next, i don't consider 1-2 seasons of less than spectacular play to be a trend, i think it takes 3-4 years to truly guage what is a trend or what is simply an off season.

And in the last six years, ZERO Conference championships and zero National titles.

Also, some of AL, AU, FL, and LSU's best players are from Georgia.

In the last four years, they have one win against a top 10 team, and that was Ga Tech.

Look no one is saying Richt is a bad coach, but his SEC record over the last four years is 20-12 one East title, and no conference championship. Which averages out to a 5-3 SEC record. Slightly above average. The problem is that with the built in advantages UGA has, they should never get passed by AU, SC, UT, or Arkansas.

I guess I just see Georgia as a sleeping giant. They should be as impossible to beat as LSU and Alabama. They aren't. A great coach could make Georgia into a powerhouse. Same with Florida.
