Anything new on Gabe Jackson and Tobias Smith for next year?

Heard Jackson may go pro and Smith may get a 6th year of eligibility. Hoping that Jackson takes the Banks route and Smith does in fact get his year. Really need two Sr. stalwarts to anchor the G positions. A Sr. in Siddoway and two Jrs. in Day and Clausell will be solid and will be good for a few wins on their own. Someone needs to remind Jackson that Sherrod coming back for his Sr. year worked out fairly well for him.

If we lose both guys, I guess all is not lost, especially behind Smith, as we'll have a So. Justin Malone who's played a bunch. Losing Jackson would be a dagger though, akin to losing Fletcher Cox this year. I know it's a nice consolation in recruiting by putting guys in the NFL, especially as Jrs., but these are big voids. Nothing but Ben Beckwith behind him, but I assume Damein Robinson or Dylan Holley could fill this spot. We actually do have depth for once.

I don't think people realize how solid this OL will be compared to this year and last. Offense will improve again from this year to next about as much as it did from 2011 to this year.

No, But A Few Related Points

IMO, I don't think Jackson goes for third round money. I wouldn't lose any sleep if Smith decides to move on. His body has proven unreliable and we won't have such a favorable schedule next year. At some point State has to start giving significant reps to young players. Let them go through spring with a purpose.

I hope Tyler tests the waters. It will give him an external opinion on his game for areas of improvement - e.g., he can't hold the ball for ten seconds. Plus, I think that testing the waters gives writers and scouts a profile for national awards, a la Banks.

Clausell and Siddoway

if they do not improve exponentially, I would rather see Jake Thomas play as a true freshman and find someone else for the other tackle position.

I think maybe Tyler feels the same even though he would never say it.

You can never have too many offensive linemen- and when Smith can play- dat boy good. Plus, he is a great recruiter for Mississippi State. ****, they say he is better than Hevesy.

Gabe is probably 50/50 as far as returning. Being a 3rd or 4th rounder or so will be tempting- but he does have the Banks example right in front of him.

Justin Malone played a helluva lot this year and will be nothing but better next year. It would be great to have them all back

Clausell and Siddoway played pretty well last year. We got much better tackle play in 2012 than we did in 2011. Think about this- as long as Tyler holds the ball alot, Tyler isnt mobile, and as many times as we threw it- we only gave up 16 sacks. Tennessee was the only SEC team that gave up fewer- including OL's from Bama and A&M that were full of future NFL draft picks.

Certainly the offensive line gets some credit for that, but it has to be noted that one of Tyler's strongest skills is not taking sacks. He's one of the best college players I've ever seen at staying calm amidst pressure. I think it actually helps that he's not mobile because he's not tempted to try and scramble for first downs.

whether Tyler stayed calm or not- the fact we only gave up 16 sacks shows that he got pretty good pass protection. Especially when you factor in how we didnt throw quick very often (which I still don't understand about our philosophy). Tyler did a good job of making reads, was very accurate, etc- but our OL did a good job of protecting him this year. Now we have to improve the run game to help him a little more.

Did the Jr. College OL from CA redshirt? Amazing we would go all the way to Los Angeles to sign a Jr. College player that never plays. Also, what about the 4 star lineman from North Panola that never played? And the reshirted linemen from Collinsville, Olive Branch and Houston, Texas. None of these players are seeing playing time. Appears that we aren't doing too well in evaluations.

Siddoway started for us. Muniz is a RS Soph? Templeton Hardy isn't going to ever take a meaningful snap. Damien Robinson also played a good bit. Might move to guard next year.

Some of these replies in this thread are seriously trying to give me an aneurysm.

The Jr. College OL from Ca that never plays? Oh, you mean the one that started all 12 games for us at right tackle, Charles Siddoway?

How can I even address the rest of what you said, after you missed so badly on your primary point.

Fact - OL is the single most difficult position to evaluate in all of football. Even the Alabama and LSUs of the world miss and miss often on OL. Difference between Mullen and Croom is, Mullen averages taking 5 every single year - Croom would often take 2, maybe 3. I dare say the BEST evaulators of OL talent are wrong 50% of the time at the collegiate level.

Another fact - NO ONE MSU will ever get on the OL is ready to go as a true freshman. NO ONE. EVER. Not at MSU.

Joey Trapp plays on ST. Templeton Hardy was a Croom recruit who sucks, so yes, you're right.

You must be talking about Daniel Knox, who's a Fr. Robinson from OB is a So. Muniz is a So. Give these guys time, pal. Don't know why our fanbase is so impatient.

You remember hometowns but not names? We did what we had to do in 2010 - signed a ton of offensive linemen to buld some depth.

Why would those guys see playing time if they're not better than our starters? You rarely sub in offensive linemen unless someone is hurt or it's garbage time. Robinson & Lawson both had legit offers from other BCS schools - we'd be idiots to turn them down with as little depth as we had. Muniz tore up his knee just before the egg bowl last year so that's a good reason you didn't see him this year.

Hardy was a Croom holdover. Trapp was our last ditch effort to sign any JUCO lineman after we got turned down by quite a few others. He did not redshirt & is gone. Knox was a redshirt freshman at tackle with at least four guys ahead of him.

I'll add to that half of those sacks (8 of 16) came in the last three games alone.

We were tied for 28th in the Nation (w/ Notre Dame and Northwestern) for fewest sacks allowed. So not so rosy a picture.
